The twelve houses describe areas of life. Planets describe actors and functions; signs describe style and condition; houses show where those functions operate.
An easy analogy is an apartment building:
- The house is the room.
- A planet in the house is a tenant doing something there.
- The sign on the house sets the rules of the room.
- The planet ruling that sign is the landlord, carrying the house's business to another part of the chart.
That last step is why an empty house is never meaningless.

These meanings developed over centuries and are not identical across every school. Modern astrology often broadens or psychologizes them. A sound reading should make its framework visible.
How Are The Houses Calculated?
Houses are calculated from the chart's time and location. The Ascendant is the degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon. The Midheaven is connected with the local meridian and the highest region of the chart. Together with the Descendant and IC, these angles establish the chart's orientation to a specific place and moment.
That is why birth time matters. The planets remain at nearly the same zodiacal positions over a short span, but the angles and houses move quickly as Earth rotates.
Different house systems divide the chart differently:
- Whole Sign: the entire rising sign becomes the first house, the next sign the second, and so on.
- Equal House: the first house begins at the Ascendant degree and every house covers exactly 30 degrees.
- Placidus: a time-based quadrant system that usually produces unequal houses.
- Porphyry, Regiomontanus, Campanus, Koch, and others: alternative quadrant divisions built from different geometric principles.
The house system can change a planet's house without changing its zodiacal sign or degree. A public interpretation should therefore state which system it uses.
Angular, Succedent, And Cadent Houses
The houses form three groups based on their relationship to the angles.
Angular Houses: 1St, 4Th, 7Th, And 10Th
Angular houses are associated with action, visibility, immediacy, and power to manifest. Planets in or near angular houses often become prominent in the life.

- 4th: home and foundations

Succedent Houses: 2Nd, 5Th, 8Th, And 11Th
Succedent houses follow the angles. They are often associated with resources, continuation, stability, and what supports or results from angular action.
The second supports the first through livelihood. The fifth follows the fourth through children, pleasure, and generation. The eighth concerns the resources and consequences attached to the seventh. The eleventh supports tenth-house action through friends, patrons, and gains.
Cadent Houses: 3Rd, 6Th, 9Th, And 12Th
Cadent houses fall away from the angles. They can describe transition, movement, learning, labor, belief, isolation, and conditions less directly controlled by the native.
Cadent does not mean unimportant. A planet ruling the Ascendant or Midheaven can make a cadent house central to the life. Angularity describes one kind of strength, not the total value of a placement.
The Four House Axes
Opposite houses form topic polarities.
First And Seventh: Self And Other
The first describes the native; the seventh describes partners, opponents, and consequential one-to-one encounters. This axis is not independence versus romance. It is the relationship between one's own position and the people standing across from it.

The ruler of a house is the planet that rules the zodiac sign associated with that house. The ruler acts as the house's manager and carries its topics to the house it occupies.

An empty house has no natal planet occupying it. It does not mean nothing happens in that area of life.

- The planet ruling that sign;
- The ruler's sign, house, aspects, and condition;

Most charts have empty houses because ten planets cannot occupy all twelve places. An empty seventh house does not mean no relationships. An empty tenth does not mean no career.

This is still not a job-title generator. Aspects to Venus, the Midheaven, planets in the tenth, and timing techniques determine how and when the pattern becomes visible.

Modern astrology sometimes turns every house into an inner trait. That can be useful, but it can also erase concrete life circumstances.
