Almost everything written about the Big Three describes each sign separately and then stops. That leaves out the part that actually matters, which is how the three interact, and the fact that one of them is not a peer of the other two at all.

The Rising Sign Is Not One Of Three Equals
This is the point most Big Three content misses.
Your Sun and Moon are planets. Your rising sign is not. It is the degree of the zodiac that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born, and it does two structural jobs that neither luminary does.
It sets your houses, which decides what area of life every planet in your chart operates in. And it hands the chart to a ruler: the planet that rules your rising sign becomes the chart ruler, the single planet whose condition colours everything else.
Which means the rising sign usually promotes one of the other two, or promotes a third planet over both of them.
Cancer rising makes the Moon the chart ruler. Your Moon is no longer a third of a personality summary, it is the planet steering the entire chart, and its sign, house and aspects organise everything.
Leo rising does the same for the Sun.
Any of the other ten rising signs hands the chart to Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Saturn, which means the planet running your chart is not in your Big Three at all. Virgo rising with a Mercury in the twelfth is a very different person from Virgo rising with a Mercury on the Midheaven, and neither difference shows up in a Sun, Moon and rising summary.
Do Not Blend Them Into One Adjective
The common mistake is to average the three into a single description. Taurus Sun, Aquarius Moon, Cancer rising does not produce a person who is somewhat stubborn, somewhat detached and somewhat sensitive.
Read each function on its own, then read the relationships.
- The Taurus Sun develops through steadiness, value and continuity.
- The Aquarius Moon settles itself through distance, ideas and autonomy.
- Cancer rising makes the Moon the chart ruler, so that Aquarius Moon is now running the show.
So the headline for this chart is not the Taurus Sun. It is an Aquarius Moon with an unusual amount of authority, steering a chart that presents as Cancerian and is trying to build something Taurean. That is a much stranger and more accurate picture than three adjectives in a row.
What If They Contradict Each Other?
Contradiction is normal and it is not a problem to be solved. A chart contains several needs at once and they were never required to agree.
A fire Sun wants action while an earth Moon wants predictability. A private water Sun under an air rising sign looks socially easy while processing everything slowly and internally. Neither combination is broken.
What tells you whether these functions cooperate or have to negotiate is the aspects between them, specifically between the Sun, the Moon and the chart ruler. Two of them in easy aspect means those parts of you tend to pull the same direction. A hard aspect means they want different things and you have been managing that since birth.
How To Find Yours
You need three pieces of information: your birth date, your exact local birth time, and the city and country you were born in.
Check that whatever calculator you use handles daylight saving and historical time zones, since those are the most common source of a wrong rising sign.
