Jupiter in a composite chart signifies the areas that will provide a solid basis for growth through the relationship. Hand says a strong Jupiter helps to ensure that whatever the course of the relationship, both people will be aware of how much they were helped by being together. The house position designates which aspect is emphasised as a growth area, one the two can depend on for sustenance and which will not be the cause of conflict and difficulty.
The composite eighth house holds two meanings Hand insists on keeping together. It is joint resources, which in a composite is hard to separate from the second house because you cannot clearly distinguish between the two partners, though the eighth can also refer to the finances of people outside the relationship. And it is the house of major transformations, which he defines as the passing away of any old order and the building up of a new one, a meaning not limited to literal death. A strong eighth house relationship, he says, will very likely make a considerable impact on both people, especially at the psychological level.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand adds a clause to the transformation reading that is rare in the book and worth noticing. Even if the two grow apart, as can happen to any couple, they will part without much difficulty, knowing that the relationship has been good even if it was not permanent.
On the resources side he is specific and practical. The placement may make the two quite successful in their dealings with property and resources in general, so long as they work together. He rates it a very good placement for a business or professional relationship, particularly one that must rely on outside financing to any extent. In a marriage, he says, they may receive bequests or other financial assistance from others, and at any rate they should have little trouble borrowing money jointly whenever they need it.
In a sexual relationship, this placement helps to ensure that sex is a source of reinforcement for both people, even where there are problems at times.
His overall verdict is characteristically measured. This placement will neither make nor break a relationship, but it can help smooth over bad times by making it easier to meet material needs.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So an eighth house Jupiter should also be read through the second, and where the two natal Jupiter positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The second house is values, meaning what the two people value and their relationship to what is valued, and secondarily their shared property. Hand's reading of Jupiter there says resources are unlikely to be a source of insecurity and that the two will have enough of whatever they want. Since he already says the second and eighth cannot be cleanly separated in a composite where finances are concerned, this axis is a close one. Read together, the second is what the two hold and the eighth is what moves through them and remakes them.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand attaches no explicit warning to Jupiter in the eighth. Saying so is better than manufacturing one, and the honest material comes from elsewhere in his account.
His general note on the planet is the main source. What Jupiter brings should not be taken totally for granted, and there is always a danger of overextending in the area where Jupiter is significant, which can convert it into a source of difficulty. Where its energy flows easily, trouble is unlikely. Where it flows with difficulty, the problems usually come from doing something to excess. In the eighth house the available excess is in borrowing and in reliance on outside resources, the very things the placement makes easy.
He also says plainly that Jupiter is not usually a major source of trouble in a chart and can usually be counted on to bring benevolent results.
The house sets the issue. Whether the change is absorbed easily or with strain is described by the aspects to Jupiter, which is a separate question.
