Jupiter in the seventh house of a composite chart is very favourable for most relationships. Robert Hand states that plainly, and the reason he gives goes to the heart of what the seventh house is for.
It means the two people are likely to feel that being together is their most important means of growth. They feel they can both grow faster through the relationship than without it.
What This Placement Describes
Jupiter in a composite chart signifies the areas that will provide a solid basis for growth through the relationship. Hand says a strong Jupiter helps to ensure that whatever the course of the relationship, both people will be aware of how much they were helped by being together. The house position designates which aspect is emphasised as a growth area, one the two can depend on for sustenance and which will not be the cause of conflict and difficulty.
The composite seventh house, like the first, is a sign of a relationship in which the two are truly trying to function as a unit. Hand calls it the house of intimate one to one encounter. Where the chart is on the whole favourable, a strong seventh house is a good indication that any kind of partnership, including marriage, can survive, though he says it is not absolutely necessary, only that it helps. He also notes that the seventh is the house of open enemies, so a poorly aspected seventh house relationship will still be an intimate encounter, with the two as competitors.
Jupiter placed there makes the partnership itself the growth area.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand allows that the two probably idealise the relationship, and he immediately puts a boundary on that idealisation. It does not go so far that the ideal becomes impossible to live up to. This is one of the more useful distinctions in the chapter, because idealisation is only a problem when the standard is unreachable.
He then describes something that keeps the placement healthy. Even though the two idealise being together, they are not totally possessive. They know enough to give each other room to breathe. Growth through a partnership and freedom within it are not in competition here.
His summing up is confident and specific. Normally this placement will be very favourable. The two may demand high standards of behaviour from each other, and Hand says they are also likely to get what they demand in that regard.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a seventh house Jupiter should also be read through the first, and where the two natal Jupiter positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The first house is the persona of a relationship, the impression it makes and the extent to which the two are seen as a unit in their own right. Hand's reading of Jupiter there describes a relationship that helps both people become better and more fulfilled individuals, marked by idealism and by an optimism that helps them meet high expectations. Read as an axis, the seventh is growth that comes from the partnership and the first is growth that shows as who the two have become. Both houses are angular, so both ends carry weight.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand names one possible problem and frames it carefully. Under certain conditions one person may demand more freedom than the other is willing to give. He calls this the only possible problem with the placement.
His resolution is equally measured. In such a situation, if the more restrictive one can give the other that freedom in the particular instance, it will work out all right. The difficulty is specific and so is the way through it, and neither is a statement about either person.
The general Jupiter caution applies here too. Hand says what the planet brings should not be taken totally for granted, and that there is always a danger of overextending in the area where Jupiter is significant, which can convert it into a source of difficulty. Where its energy flows easily, trouble is unlikely. Where it flows with difficulty, the problems usually come from doing something to excess. In the seventh house, the excess available is in what the two ask of the partnership, expecting it to carry more growth than any relationship can.
He also says plainly that Jupiter is not usually a major source of trouble in a chart and can usually be counted on to bring benevolent results.
The house sets the issue. Whether the growth through partnership runs freely or presses on either person is described by the aspects to Jupiter, which is a separate question.
