Hand says a strong Jupiter helps to ensure that whatever the course of the relationship, both people will be aware of how much they were helped by being together. The composite third house carries much the same meaning as in a birth chart: communication, mind, the routine day to day environment, and relatives. Hand says the communications side is especially important, since a couple who cannot communicate are in real trouble. He also describes the third as the house of the lower mind, carrying habitual patterns of thought, unquestioned opinions and unexamined notions, and he notes that these patterns are very often a source of conflict and that people are frequently not even aware of holding them.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand says this relationship will help to change those habits in a very pleasant and helpful way, and he adds an observation about the planet's method: Jupiter does not usually bring about change through upsets.
He describes the result in practical terms. Narrow habits of thought and rigid ways of thinking will be expanded by the experience of this relationship. It will open new ways of dealing with everyday matters, so that the two people's handling of ordinary things should improve.
There is an intellectual appetite in it as well. Hand says the two may find that together they become more interested in philosophy and other mind expanding disciplines. The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. The ninth house is the overall view of the world the two people take, their collective attitudes and the nature of their intellectual exchange. His reading of it describes a relationship that expands awareness through new perspectives and experiences, strong intellectual interests in common, and a world view in which honour and ethics matter. Read as an axis, the third is the daily mind and the ninth is the philosophy it grows into. This is an unusually continuous pairing, since the change Jupiter makes in ordinary thinking is the same change the ninth house describes at full scale.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand attaches no explicit warning to Jupiter in the third, and saying so is better than inventing one. What can be drawn honestly comes from his general remarks on the planet and the house.
On the planet, he says that what Jupiter brings should not be taken totally for granted, and that there is always a danger of overextending in the area where Jupiter is significant, which can convert it into a source of difficulty. Where the energy flows easily, trouble is unlikely. Where it flows with difficulty, the problems usually come from doing something to excess. In this house the excess available is mental: expansiveness in thinking that outruns any grounding, or interest that spreads faster than it settles.
On the house, his general caution is that in a close personal relationship built on mental affinity, mental exchange may become a substitute for a much needed deep emotional exchange.
He also says plainly that Jupiter is not usually a major source of trouble in a chart and can usually be counted on to bring benevolent results.
