The fifth house is a very compatible position for Mars in a composite chart. Robert Hand says so plainly and then attaches a condition in the same sentence: the needs it generates must be met.
It is a position of great self expression, so there must be ample opportunity for self expression in this relationship. The two must give each other plenty of room to be themselves with a minimum of interference.
What This Placement Describes
The basic principle of Mars, in Hand's account, is the ego drive, the energy by which a person sustains a sense of being an individual toward the world and toward others. In a composite chart it signifies the ability to create an environment where both people can express themselves fully without threatening each other and provoking destructive conflicts. He allows that some conflict is inevitable and says it should not be suppressed, but that the ego drives have to be basically compatible.
The composite fifth house has much the same range as in a birth chart: love affairs, children where appropriate, creativity and self expression. Hand says the self expression reading is especially critical in a composite. The fifth represents the extent to which the relationship provides a setting for both people to be themselves in the most genuine and honest way possible, and he adds that being real should not be an effort.
Mars in that house means the ego drive has landed in exactly the area that exists to accommodate it. That fit is what makes the placement compatible, and it is also what makes the condition non negotiable.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand states the underlying rule twice in this delineation because it carries the whole reading. Mars is related to ego energies, which create no problem if expressed. If they are not expressed, however, they can create many difficulties.
His recommendation is activity with a direction. It would be excellent for the two to be as active as possible together, with a common set of goals toward which they bend their energies. In that way the energy that might become a source of conflict can bind the two of them together.
In a sexual relationship he says this position can be extremely beneficial, provided the advice above is followed. The fifth is the house of love affairs, and Mars, along with Venus, rules sexual energy. He also holds more generally that a successful sexual relationship needs both Venus, the ability to relate, and Mars, the ego drive, to be in good condition, since there is a large ego component involved.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a fifth house Mars should also be read through the eleventh, and where the two natal Mars positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The eleventh is the house of friendship and of shared hopes and ideals. Hand's reading of Mars there describes two people who enjoy working with others in groups and derive more satisfaction when what they are doing is part of a greater whole, and who will work very hard to attain what they want out of life. Read as an axis, the fifth is personal self expression and the eleventh is the same energy given over to something larger. Both houses concern friendship in Hand's scheme, and both make shared goals the condition of the energy working well.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The difficulty is the condition unmet. If the two impose all manner of limitations on each other, Hand says, there will be considerable conflict. That is the direct consequence of ego energy with nowhere to go, and it is worth reading as a description of a constraint rather than of the people.
He is specific about the sexual case, and unusually pointed. In a sexual relationship with this position, if the two do not work well together on a sexual level, there is not likely to be harmony on any other level. The energy that should be used in sex instead becomes the source of very divisive ego conflict.
His general remark on the house adds a note about what this kind of relationship is for. In a fifth house relationship the two are together but still individuals, not operating as a single unit, and they are together because they enjoy being themselves in each other's company.
The house sets the issue. Whether the energy flows or jams is described by the aspects to Mars, which is a separate question.
