Composite Mercury in the second house has two different meanings, and Robert Hand presents them as alternatives rather than as a blend. Either the two people value things of the mind, or they put a lot of mental effort into what they possess and otherwise value.
Both are readings of the same fact, which is that the relationship's thinking is organised around what it holds worth having.
What This Placement Describes
The second house is the house of values, or more precisely of things that are valued, tangible or intangible. Hand's general treatment gives it two planes. It shows the part shared value systems play in bringing two people together, and it shows whatever finances and property the relationship contains. Where a relationship has no common property, only the first plane applies.
He also makes a point specific to the technique. In a composite chart all finances are joint finances, because you cannot tell which person is which, so the usual natal distinction between the second house and the eighth does not survive, and both houses should be consulted on material matters.
If the first meaning of this Mercury placement is the operative one, the two value books, musical instruments, radios, television, audio equipment, or other material that entertains or stimulates the mind. On a more abstract level, they may value ideas and intellectual principles themselves.
If the second is more accurate, they will spend a good deal of time managing the property they own in common and will put real effort into it. Hand notes that in an individual's birth chart a second-house Mercury signifies cleverness and intelligence in the handling of money, and he says that should be the case in a composite too.
How It Tends To Play Out
The everyday shape of this is a relationship that thinks about what it has. Purchases get discussed. Arrangements get worked out. There is an intelligence applied to resources that many relationships never manage, and it can be a genuine advantage.
Where the mental version dominates, the shared possessions themselves tend to be instruments of thought. What the two accumulate is what they use to think and talk with.
The Opposite House
Because the farther midpoint retains some effect, and that effect grows as the two natal Mercurys approach opposition, a second-house Mercury should also be read through the eighth. Where the natal positions are near opposition, Hand treats reading both as essential.
The eighth house shares the resource material almost completely in a composite, with the one distinction that it can refer to the finances and property of people outside the relationship. Its own meaning is different, and it is major transformation, the passing of an old order and the building of a new one. Hand's delineation of Mercury in the eighth describes a pair able to examine the psychological forces at work between them in the full light of consciousness. Read as an axis, the second house asks what the two think about what they have, and the eighth asks whether that same intelligence ever gets turned on the relationship itself.
He gives no threshold at which the eighth reading takes precedence and no method for combining them. Both are read.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand's practical instruction is unusually specific. Because it is likely that the two value things of the mind, or hold rather strong opinions about what they value, it is very important that they reach some kind of agreement about these matters early in the relationship. Otherwise disputes over them are likely to surface later.
That is the failure mode in a sentence. Strong opinions about value, left unexamined while everything is easy, become the ground of arguments that arrive well after the arrangements have been made. The placement supplies plenty of thinking about what is worth having and no guarantee that the two conclusions match.
The wider second-house caution applies as well. Hand notes elsewhere that disagreement over values can be a major source of conflict, and that where two people cannot agree what to do with money and property, the natal charts should be consulted.
The house sets the issue. Whether the two think their way to agreement or into a standoff is described by the aspects to Mercury, which is a separate question.
