What This Placement Describes
Hand's general treatment of the composite ninth house calls it the overall view of the world taken by the people in a relationship. A ninth-house relationship broadens both of them, exposing them to new ideas and forcing them to think across a wider spectrum of possibilities than before, which is why the phrase consciousness expanding recurs through his delineations.
Since the ninth is the house of ideas and consciousness, a strong ninth lets two people communicate at a very high level. They genuinely understand each other and share their views, and they make more than the usual effort to do so. His one certainty about a strong ninth house is that it makes a real intellectual relationship necessary, and that its absence would become the main source of difficulty between them.
The Moon there supplies the emotional version of all this. What the two have in common, in feeling as well as in thought, is how they see the world.
How It Tends To Play Out
Difference is not an obstacle here. Hand says that even where two backgrounds are quite different, communication between them will not be difficult, and that they will treat differences of that kind simply as an enjoyable challenge to their understanding of each other. That is a distinctive claim. Most placements make compatibility a matter of similarity. This one makes it a matter of appetite.
Distance is part of the picture. Hand raises the possibility that the two travel long distances together, or that they met in a place foreign to both of them, or that they come from different countries.
At its best he calls this a good position for learning and growth inside a relationship. The two will continually teach each other, and even if the relationship does not last, both will feel they benefited from it. That last clause is worth noting, because it treats the value of the connection as independent of its duration.
It is good for any type of relationship and strongest where communication and the exchange of ideas are central. He names people working together on a project, writing together, or negotiating in any capacity.
The Opposite House
The farther midpoint keeps some effect, and it increases as the two natal Moons approach opposition, so a ninth-house Moon should also be read through the third. Where the natal positions are near opposition, Hand treats reading both as essential.
The third house is the everyday mind: ordinary communication, habitual opinion, the routine environment and relatives. Read against the ninth, it grounds the placement. A relationship can be excellent at large questions and shaky at the daily exchange that keeps things running, and the third is where that shows. Hand notes elsewhere that habitual attitudes are often invisible to the people holding them, which is exactly what an expansive outlook makes easy to skip over.
He gives no threshold at which the third-house reading takes over, and no way of blending the two. Both are read.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand's qualification for a personal relationship is specific. This placement by itself works more to produce friendship than love, though he adds that even in a love relationship there will be a strong intellectual affinity between the two.
The pressure that follows is quiet rather than dramatic. When the shared outlook is the emotional bond, the relationship can operate at a high level of mutual understanding and never quite arrive at plain intimacy. Two people can teach each other a great deal and remain slightly abstract to one another. Nothing in this house position pushes toward the ordinary, unguarded exchange that closer connections run on, because the elevated version is so satisfying.
The other thing to watch is that a shared philosophy can start standing in for shared experience, particularly when the relationship is stretched across distance.
