Composite Moon in the twelfth house is a demanding position, in that it requires two people to do a great deal of work that most couples are unwilling to do. Robert Hand's formulation is exact: any relationship is helped by that work, but with this placement doing it is absolutely necessary.
Left alone, the two would be very likely to keep their feelings hidden not only from each other but from themselves.
What This Placement Describes
Hand's general account of the composite twelfth house restates the traditional material in plain terms. The twelfth is repressed thought: once conscious ideas pushed out of the waking mind because the mind chose not to deal with them. It also shows the environmental factors that caused the repression. The traditional topics of hospitals and prisons he sets aside as not really relevant here.
The problem with repressed ideas is that they produce unconsciously motivated actions, often harmful to the relationship. Because those actions are automatic they tend to be wrong for the situation, undoing the relationship rather than helping it. In a strongly twelfth-house relationship, two people do many things to and with each other that make no sense in terms of what is actually happening between them.
With the Moon there, that material is emotional. Hand says the hidden feelings become the source of actions and behaviour that neither person understands and that are very detrimental to the relationship.
How It Tends To Play Out
There is a characteristic relationship to the outside world. The two tend to shy away from other people, or at least to keep their feelings hidden from them, and Hand suggests the reason is a fear that anyone who gets close will discover their secrets. The relationship acquires a private, sealed quality.
His prescription is direct and it is the substance of the delineation. Both need to plunge into the relationship, find out the truth of what is going on, and face it squarely and honestly. Do not shrink from what you find, he says, because the consequences of not being honest with yourself and each other are far worse than anything you may be hiding.
The payoff he describes is substantial. If the buried feelings emerge gradually out of an honest search for understanding, the wisdom gained will make both people much wiser than those who never had to face such a challenge.
The Opposite House
Because the farther midpoint keeps some effect, growing as the two natal Moons approach opposition, a twelfth-house Moon should also be read through the sixth. Where the natal positions are near opposition, Hand treats reading both as essential.
The sixth house is duty, service and the tasks a relationship carries, and Hand calls it inherently a house of inequality, where giving and taking fail to balance. Read together, the axis is revealing for this Moon in particular. An unspoken imbalance of giving is precisely the sort of thing a twelfth-house relationship buries, and the sixth is where the buried resentment is actually being generated, in the ordinary daily business of who does what.
He supplies no threshold at which one house outweighs the other and no method for blending the two. Both are read.
Where It Gets Difficult
The greatest danger Hand names is emotional dishonesty at the very least, and sometimes open and outright dishonesty. He is careful about the cause. Very often this happens because the two do not really know what is going on inside the relationship. There may be repressed fears that neither knows how to face, or cannot face directly. It is not primarily a failure of character.
The consequence, if the truth is not sought, is stated in unusually strong language. The relationship will make both people lesser than they really are, and give them the feeling of having been defeated in life by forces they do not understand. And when the repressed feelings finally do emerge, they will explode destructively and perhaps violently.
That is the placement's live risk rather than its verdict. Hand's general view of twelfth-house relationships is that they cannot be rejected out of hand, that some people benefit greatly from intense psychological encounter, and that they need careful evaluation rather than dismissal.
The house sets the issue. How the two handle it is described by the aspects to the Moon, which is a separate question.
