Robert Hand calls the fourth house one of the most ambiguous placements for composite Neptune, and he says so before giving any delineation. That hedge is part of the reading.
Where a relationship has a recognisable home, the fourth house Neptune tends to make that home an ideal the two work very hard to reach. They daydream about it together, saying how nice it would be to have a home of their own, or a home like this one. What runs alongside the daydream is a tendency to ignore what is actually happening in the home they have.
What This Placement Describes
Neptune in a composite chart marks what is idealised and what is not seen clearly, and Hand holds those together rather than treating one as the truth behind the other. He says it is neither possible nor desirable to give up the ideals. What is necessary is to learn to recognise reality and to let the ideals and the reality exist side by side without conflict.
The composite fourth house is more than the home. Hand points out that many relationships have nothing that could be called a home and the fourth house still matters. It is angular, which adds weight to whatever sits in it. More fundamentally it shows the roots of a relationship, literally in geographic terms and figuratively in terms of mental and emotional background. It signifies the innermost depths of a relationship, which may lie so far in as to be invisible at the surface. It is the house to check for underlying compatibility, whether the backgrounds fit and whether the basic emotional and psychological characteristics fit. Where there is a shared home, the home is the physical embodiment of that innermost life and is affected by anything that affects it.
How It Tends To Play Out
The ideal home is real work, not idle wishing. Hand describes a couple genuinely striving toward it. The problem is the split, because attention goes to the home imagined rather than the home occupied, and what is happening in the actual one is frequently important and worth knowing about.
He extends this past the literal house. Sometimes a fourth house Neptune indicates that the personal lives the two share have become quite difficult, and neither of them is paying any attention to that fact. The fourth is the innermost level of the relationship, so what goes unwatched here is not a domestic detail, it is the base the whole thing rests on.
The other reading Hand gives is the high one, and he gives it plainly. At its best a fourth house Neptune signifies that spiritual ideals are at the very basis of the relationship. Where that is the case, he says most of the problems above will not be as difficult.
The Opposite House
The paired house rule comes out of the mechanics of the composite. Any pair of planets has two midpoints, the nearer is used, and the farther keeps some effect that grows as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a fourth house Neptune should also be read through the tenth, and where the two natal Neptunes are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The composite tenth house is the direction and evolutionary purpose of a relationship, its status and what it is understood to be in the world. Hand's Neptune in the tenth brings confusion about exactly what the relationship is and where it is going, and a surface appearance that may conceal quite a different reality. Read as an axis, the fourth is the private base and the tenth is the public standing, and a Neptune on that line can make both of them imagined rather than examined.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The failure mode is not conflict, it is inattention. Nothing about this placement generates a dramatic scene. It generates a couple who are busy, hopeful and pointed at something ahead of them, while the ground they are standing on shifts without comment.
Because the fourth house is below the surface, the shift is hard to catch. A composite chart cannot tell which person stopped looking, and Hand's whole method rules that question out. What it says is that in this relationship the deepest layer is the layer most likely to be misread.
What is asked for is not less idealism. It is a second look at the home and the private life as they actually are, held next to the version being worked toward. The house sets the issue. Whether the handling runs easy or hard is described by the aspects to Neptune, which is a separate question.
