Composite Neptune in the second house points at confusion between two people about what they hold to be important. The second is the house of whatever is valued, most commonly but not only material resources, and Robert Hand says that with Neptune here it may simply be unclear to either person what they actually value.
His instruction on that is blunt and worth keeping. Find out. If a couple does not know what they consider important, they will find out only when someone takes it away.
What This Placement Describes
Neptune in a composite chart has two faces. It governs disappointment, delusion and the gradual disappearance of things, and it also governs whatever gets idealised, the spiritual current Hand places at the root of love in its highest sense. He says the two sidedness is what makes the planet so hard to handle. The area of the chart Neptune occupies is the area where the two are most likely to delude themselves, and therefore the area they most need to be clear about.
The composite second house covers values on two levels. It shows the part value systems played in bringing the relationship together, whether the two came together partly because they value similar things, and whether disagreement over values is a source of conflict. It also covers whatever finances and property exist in the relationship, though Hand notes that not every relationship has common property, in which case only the first meaning applies. He adds a structural point specific to composite work. In a composite all finances are joint finances, because the two people cannot be told apart, so the usual distinction between the second house and the eighth does not hold and both should be consulted on anything financial.
How It Tends To Play Out
The straightforward form is confusion about managing money and possessions. Hand allows for serious misconceptions, or for the two being simply ignorant of how to deal with what they own.
Then he turns it over. Because of Neptune's double nature, the same placement can give a couple an uncanny sense of where to find money and an ability to sniff it out in very unlikely places. He does not treat this as a consolation clause. He treats it as a live alternative, and says it is very important for the two to examine the matters ruled by the second house and work out which of the two effects they are actually getting.
His summary rule is the useful part. One of two situations applies. Either material possessions are not very important to the pair, in which case they should have no trouble with them. Or possessions are important, they should not be important to that degree, and trouble is likely. Neptune does not deny things in general so much as it denies things to which people are too attached.
The Opposite House
The paired house rule follows from the mechanics of the composite. Any pair of planets has two midpoints, the nearer one is used, and the farther one keeps some effect that grows as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a second house Neptune should also be read through the eighth, and where the two natal Neptunes are near opposition, reading both is essential.
Here the pairing is unusually concrete, because Hand already says to consult both houses on money. The composite eighth carries the resources held jointly or belonging to people outside the relationship, and it is also the house of major transformations, the passing away of an old order and the building of a new one. His Neptune in the eighth warns about deception and fraud in financial dealings while allowing the same tremendous intuitive awareness, and adds that hidden factors in the surrounding world may be driving changes that are hard to understand.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The real difficulty is that the two effects look alike from the inside. A couple with a genuine nose for resources and a couple who have badly misread their situation both feel confident. Hand's answer is not a test but a habit, which is to keep examining the second house matters until it becomes clear which one is running, and to stay careful in the meantime.
The second difficulty is attachment. The rule that Neptune denies what is clung to means the trouble is not caused by having possessions, it is caused by loading them with more weight than they can carry. Where a couple genuinely does not organise itself around what it owns, this placement is quiet.
Nothing here forecasts poverty. It marks the area where the two need to know their own values well enough to say them out loud. The house sets the issue. Whether the handling runs easy or hard is described by the aspects to Neptune, which is a separate question.
