Composite Pluto in the fifth house has its most intense expression in a personal relationship or a love affair that involves deep feelings. Robert Hand describes the fifth as the house of self expression, the house of one's own being, and says Pluto here makes it unusually important that both people are able to express themselves fully. Each carries a powerful drive to do so.
In a love affair the placement can signify extremely powerful emotions, strong enough that the relationship feels extraordinary to the two in it.
What This Placement Describes
Pluto in a composite chart rules death and regeneration, the clearing of an old order to make room for a new one. Hand notes that its sheer force often separates it from that meaning so that it is felt purely as power, and that in a sexual relationship it gives special power and impact to the emotions and makes every happening dramatic and important. He calls this heaviness one of the more difficult attributes of the planet, because it can warp perspective completely.
The composite fifth house is love affairs, children where relevant, creativity and self expression, and Hand treats self expression as the critical reading in composite work. The fifth shows how far the relationship lets each person be genuinely themselves. He is blunt about the alternative. Many relationships survive only because each person puts up a false front, and collapse when the truth arrives. A well running fifth house means being real is easy rather than an effort. He adds that a fifth house relationship is not two people forming a team but two people who enjoy each other's company while remaining individuals, which is why he thinks it may not be the best house for a marriage, though it is not harmful to one.
How It Tends To Play Out
The most important thing Hand says about this placement is a limit on what it predicts. By itself, Pluto does not specify which feelings are so strong. If the love is strong, Pluto in the fifth will intensify that. If the forces of discord are strong, it will intensify those. Whatever the dominant emotions are, they will be experienced strongly.
In a sexual relationship, physical sex takes on greater than usual importance and gets experienced as an escape from the everyday world. Hand flags the cost of that arrangement rather than the pleasure. It is a fairly heavy burden to place on sex, and unless the relationship is working on a physical level, severe difficulties are likely. He notes, in contrast with what Neptune does in the same house, that Pluto in the fifth does not indicate a platonic relationship.
The last reading is the regenerative one. The relationship itself may be viewed, at least subconsciously, as a vehicle for self regeneration, for making a new person of oneself. Hand says that too places a heavy burden on a relationship, and then adds that it may very well fulfil that purpose. Both halves of that sentence belong to the delineation.
The Opposite House
The paired house rule comes out of the mechanics of the composite. Any pair of planets has two midpoints, the nearer is used, and the farther keeps some effect that grows as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a fifth house Pluto should also be read through the eleventh, and where the two natal Plutos are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The composite eleventh house is friendship and shared hopes, and Hand thinks lovers with a strong eleventh are also friends. His Pluto in the eleventh brings ideals felt very strongly and fought for, a sense that the two did not come together casually, and friends who are intense or carry some form of power. Read as an axis, the fifth is what the two are together and the eleventh is what they are aiming at, and the intensity Hand describes belongs to both ends.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The difficulty follows straight from Hand's limit. Intensity is not a direction. A relationship with this placement amplifies whatever is already dominant, and if that happens to be friction, the friction gets the same magnification the love would have received.
The burden Hand names twice is the second difficulty. Asking sex to be an escape from ordinary life, or asking the relationship to remake a person, loads it heavily enough that ordinary trouble on the physical level stops being ordinary.
He does not treat any of this as damage. He says the regenerative purpose may genuinely be fulfilled. The house sets the issue. Whether the energy is experienced as difficult or easy is described by the aspects to Pluto, which Hand treats as a separate question.
