Composite Saturn in the eleventh house sits in one of the houses of relationship, since the eleventh represents friendship. Robert Hand notes that this covers two things at once: the friendship the two feel for each other, and the friends they have as a couple.
His reading of the first is characteristic of how he handles Saturn. The placement does not make friendship between the two impossible, but it does somewhat cool the expression of it. The relationship may still be a very enduring one.
What This Placement Describes
Saturn in a composite chart marks where a relationship carries insecurity and where it takes on definite form. Hand describes Saturn as an inhibitor, the resistance in reality that forces things to assume shape, and says the house position tells which part of the bond becomes structured and, unchecked, rigid. He also says Saturn very often indicates a lasting relationship, one where reliability replaces flamboyance.
The composite eleventh house is the house of friendship, and Hand says a strong one is very appropriate in a composite chart. It does not limit a relationship to friendship. It helps two people be friendly in whatever they are doing together, which he says matters especially in a sexual relationship, since lovers with a strong eleventh will also be friends. He calls it an excellent house for a marriage composite. Because it is also the house of hopes and wishes, a well aspected eleventh gives a relationship a strong sense of shared ideals, with both people looking for the same things in life. He adds a note directly relevant here: difficult aspects, especially those of Saturn, may bring about conflicts of ideals, or may deny friendship, limiting a relationship to a purely professional or a purely sexual one.
How It Tends To Play Out
On the friendship side, Hand describes a pair who may be quite reserved with each other, and then says something that turns the usual reading around. That reserve may be just as well, because it will permit the relationship to last longer. An eleventh house Saturn can indicate a very long lasting friendship.
That is the placement working properly. Warmth that is not performed does not have to be sustained, and a bond that never asked for effusiveness does not run out of it. What holds two people here is constancy rather than display.
On the outside friends, Hand gives both directions. When Saturn is operating positively, it indicates few outside friends, but those few will be firm and long lasting. They may be older than either person. When Saturn's influence is not working out well, the pair may have no outside friends at all, probably because of an insularity that makes it impossible to share themselves with others.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. There are always two midpoints for a pair of planets. The nearer is used, but the farther keeps some effect, one that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So an eleventh house Saturn should also be read through the fifth, and where the two natal Saturns are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The fifth house is love affairs, creativity, children where that applies, and above all the ability of each person to be genuine in the other's presence. Hand's Saturn in the fifth subordinates lightness to duty and responsibility, and describes a relationship approached realistically rather than romantically. Read as an axis, the fifth is enjoying each other and the eleventh is liking each other and wanting the same things, and Saturn asks both to be built rather than assumed.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The sharper difficulty Hand names has nothing to do with reserve. The eleventh is also the house of ideals, hopes and wishes, and he says Saturn here can signify that the two have very different ideals and do not usually react the same way toward things. That can reduce their sympathy for each other and make the relationship quite difficult.
That is a real problem and it is worth stating without softening. Two people can be committed, constant and reliable with each other and still be aiming at different things, and the eleventh house is where that shows. It is not a failure of affection. It is a divergence in what each believes life is for.
The second difficulty is the insularity he names on the outside friends side. A couple who cannot share themselves with anyone else loses the ventilation other people provide.
Hand's general counsel on Saturn applies to both. Saturn signifies fears, and fear generates an energy that can make the worst come true, so the areas Saturn most influences are the ones to relax about rather than to guard.
The house sets the issue. Whether the reserve serves the bond or isolates it is described by the aspects to Saturn, which is a separate question.
