Composite Saturn in the sixth house has both strengths and weaknesses, and Robert Hand introduces it that way rather than tilting it in either direction. The sixth is the house of duty, responsibility and work, and in that capacity he calls it an excellent house for Saturn, which is concerned with those same values.
The plain consequence is that whatever the purpose of the relationship, the two will be able to live up to the duties and responsibilities it requires. Hand says this makes it a good placement for any kind of professional relationship, because the work will get done.
What This Placement Describes
Saturn in a composite chart marks where the bond carries insecurity and where it takes on definite form. Hand describes Saturn as an inhibitor, the resistance in reality that forces things to assume a shape, and says the house position shows which area gets structured and, unchecked, rigid. He also states that Saturn frequently indicates a relationship that endures, where reliability stands in for flamboyance.
The composite sixth house refers to the duties and responsibilities a relationship must fulfil. Hand is careful about it. All relationships have obligations and in most cases those obligations are not harmful. They become a problem only when they are the major element of the bond, leaving no room for the self expression ruled by the fifth. When the sixth is too strong, the two see the relationship as a duty to be met rather than something to be enjoyed. In a business relationship that is not much of a problem, because there are tasks and obligations. He adds that health, the other traditional meaning of the sixth, has little relevance in a composite chart except where the relationship is professionally concerned with it.
How It Tends To Play Out
The competence is real and it is the first thing to say. Two people with this placement carry what they have taken on. Commitments made get kept, work assigned gets finished, and the ordinary machinery of a shared life runs. Hand notes that the best use of a strong sixth house requires approaching even a personal relationship from a strong sense of duty, which is exactly what Saturn here supplies.
He then names the drift. There may be a tendency for the sense of duty to invade the other areas of the relationship, turning it into drudgery, an obligation taken on unwillingly rather than a spontaneously joyful and demonstrative affair. He says it will be a serious relationship in the bad sense as well as the good. If that is happening, the work is to find some way of making matters lighter between the two, and he is blunt that without that the relationship does not stand a chance in the long run.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Any pair of planets has two midpoints. The nearer is used for the chart, but the farther keeps some effect, and that effect grows as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a sixth house Saturn should also be read through the twelfth, and where the two natal Saturns are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The twelfth house is repressed thought and the unconsciously motivated action that follows from it. Hand's Saturn in the twelfth describes automatic responses that neither person understands or particularly likes, and a feeling of being cramped by the relationship. Read as an axis, the sixth is what the two consciously owe each other and the twelfth is what runs underneath without being chosen. Duty that has become resentment is exactly the traffic between these two houses.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
At its worst, Hand says, a sixth house Saturn relationship can make both people feel enslaved, either by the other or by the very nature of the relationship. His remedy for that state is unusually concrete: if it ever gets to that point, the only solution is to break the connection for a while, until a sense of perspective about each other can be regained.
That is worth reading carefully, because it is not a recommendation to end anything. It is a recommendation to interrupt the machinery, on the reasoning that the machinery is what has taken over.
The underlying issue is the one Hand names in the house essay. Obligation is not the problem. Obligation as the only content is the problem, because it squeezes out the room for the two to be themselves with each other. His general counsel on Saturn applies here too: the areas Saturn most influences are the ones to relax about, since Saturn signifies fear and fear generates the energy that makes the worst come true.
The house sets the issue. Whether the duty is carried easily or resented is described by the aspects to Saturn, which is a separate question.
