Composite Sun in the eleventh house is, in Robert Hand's assessment, an excellent position for almost any type of relationship, because the eleventh is the house of friends. Whatever the relationship exists for, the two people will be able to get along with each other.
That sounds modest until you notice how much of the book is taken up with pairs who cannot.
What This Placement Describes
Hand's general treatment of the composite eleventh house calls a strong one very appropriate in a composite chart. It does not confine a relationship to friendship. It makes two people friendly in whatever they are doing together, which he says matters especially in a sexual relationship, where lovers with a strong eleventh house will also be friends. Business partners with a strong eleventh will be friends as well as associates. He calls it an excellent house for a marriage composite.
The house also governs hopes and wishes. A good, well aspected eleventh gives a relationship a strong sense of shared ideals, with both people looking for the same things in life. Hand adds a condition that reads like a requirement rather than a description: a couple with a strong eleventh house must be able to share a great deal of their lives with each other, or the relationship is not likely to be very successful.
How It Tends To Play Out
With the Sun there, Hand rates the placement as especially good for marriage, on the grounds that in the long run friendship is one of the most important elements holding a marital relationship together. He immediately marks the limit of that claim. This position does not by itself indicate sexual attraction, which has to come from other parts of the chart.
Shared hopes and ideals for the future are a strong feature, and the two will work together to reach them. Hand goes further and suggests that shared hopes and ideals may be the main thing binding the pair together in the first place.
There is a social dimension that distinguishes this placement from most of the others. The eleventh is the house of social self-expression and the capacity to fit into groups. A well placed eleventh-house Sun indicates that the two function as a small group in their own right and that together they find it easy to relate in larger ones. When they are together they enjoy the company of others and are glad to have people around. Hand draws the contrast explicitly with couples who prefer to be together without anyone else present.
Even a business or professional relationship under this Sun is likely to develop a strong personal dimension, which in most cases helps rather than hinders whatever else the relationship is doing.
The Opposite House
The farther midpoint keeps some effect, and it grows as the two natal Suns approach opposition, so an eleventh-house Sun should also be read through the fifth. Where the natal positions are near opposition, Hand treats reading both as essential.
The fifth house is self-expression, enjoyment, love affairs and children, and above all the ability of two people to be real in each other's presence without effort. Hand names friendship as ruled by both the fifth and the eleventh, so the axis genuinely doubles on that point. What the fifth adds is the private version of the same warmth: not shared ideals and shared company, but two people enjoying each other as they actually are.
He gives no threshold at which the fifth-house reading takes over, and no formula for blending the two. Both delineations are read together.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand attaches no explicit warning to this Sun placement, which is rare in the chapter, and the honest way to handle that is to say so rather than to invent one.
What the surrounding material does raise is worth keeping in view. The absence of indicated sexual attraction means a relationship can be genuinely warm, companionable, full of shared plans, and still not carry the charge either person expected. Nothing in this house position supplies that, and reading it as though it does is the common mistake.
The other pressure is the sharing requirement. A pair whose bond is built on common ideals has to keep actually sharing their lives, and where that stops, the ideals are not enough on their own. Hand notes elsewhere that difficult aspects here, particularly from Saturn, can bring conflicts of ideals, or can deny friendship altogether and leave a relationship purely professional or purely sexual.
That last point belongs to the aspects rather than the house. The house sets the issue. How the two handle it is a separate question.
