Interest gathers around philosophy, metaphysics, religion and every other route to expanded awareness. The relationship itself tends to be quite idealistic.
What This Placement Describes
Hand's general account of the composite ninth house calls it the overall view of the world taken by the people in a relationship. He uses the phrase consciousness expanding often in the delineations because a ninth-house relationship usually broadens both people, exposing them to new ideas and forcing them to think across a wider spectrum of possibilities than before.
Since the ninth is the house of ideas and consciousness, a strong ninth house lets two people communicate at a very high level. They can genuinely understand each other and share their views. Exchanging ideas plays a large part in the relationship, and they will make more than the usual effort to understand one another.
Hand states the one certainty about a strong ninth house without hedging. It makes a strong intellectual relationship necessary. If the two do not have one, that fact will be the main source of difficulty between them.
How It Tends To Play Out
Community of thinking is one of the dominant drives this position creates. The two will be very interested in communication and the sharing of ideas, and the relationship organises itself around that exchange.
Travel is part of the picture. Hand expects a good deal of it, or at minimum a strong interest in foreign and distant places, with both people treating travel as a positive force for expanding their awareness.
There is a distinctive note about tone. With the Sun in this position, a relationship between the sexes may tend to become platonic, and Hand adds that even where sex is involved a platonic feeling will still be present. This is not a statement about how much the two like each other. It is a statement about the register the relationship runs in.
For a business or professional connection he rates this position as excellent for anything involving foreign countries, for travel businesses, especially long distance travel, for importing and exporting, and for intellectual enterprises of the think tank sort. He also names a benefit that applies to any kind of relationship at all: foresight, and the ability to plan ahead for the long haul.
The Opposite House
The farther midpoint keeps some effect, and it grows as the two natal Suns approach opposition, so a ninth-house Sun should also be read through the third. Where the natal positions are near opposition, Hand treats reading both as essential.
The third house is the everyday mind and the routine environment: ordinary communication, habitual opinion, unexamined assumption, and relatives. Read as an axis with the ninth, it asks the practical question that the ninth alone will not raise. A relationship can be excellent at large ideas and poor at the simple daily exchange that keeps things running, and the third is where that shows. Hand notes elsewhere that habitual patterns of thought are often invisible to the people holding them, which is exactly what a strong ninth house can make it easy to overlook.
He supplies no threshold at which the third-house reading takes over, and no way of blending the two. Both are read.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand names only one defect for a personal relationship, and he names it twice. The relationship is likely to be more intellectual than emotional.
That is not a small thing when the connection is meant to be intimate. A pair who understand each other's ideas thoroughly can still be some distance from each other's feelings, and this placement supplies no pressure to close that gap, because the exchange of thought is already so satisfying. The idealism compounds it. A relationship held at the level of what it means and what it is for can run for a long time without either person saying anything plain about how they feel.
Set against that, the growth is real. Hand's account of a ninth-house relationship is of two people who leave it seeing more than they did before, and he treats that as its own justification.
