Composite Sun in the seventh house is usually an excellent position for any relationship in which two people are trying to work as a unit in an equal partnership. Robert Hand describes it as working together on a basis of total sharing, each making a contribution to the strength of the whole.
In most cases he calls it the best position of all for either marriage or a business partnership, because it denotes a complementarity that makes the whole stronger than either part.
What This Placement Describes
The seventh house is the house of intimate one to one encounter. In Hand's general treatment it signals, like the first, a relationship in which two people are genuinely trying to function as a unit. Given an otherwise favourable chart, a strong seventh house is a good indication that a partnership of any kind, marriage included, can survive. He does not make it a requirement. A strong and well aspected seventh is not absolutely necessary for a marriage or a business partnership, but it helps.
The distinguishing feature is how the two think of themselves. In a strong seventh-house relationship they are likely to think of themselves as one, as we and us. Hand contrasts this directly with the fifth house, where the point is enjoying each other's company. Enjoyment should be there too, but what matters more is that the two complement each other and make a strong whole.
He extends the house beyond romance. A strong seventh-house chart is also favourable to any one to one relationship where one person consults the other: patient and doctor, patient and psychotherapist, client and astrologer, client and lawyer, client and any other professional. In those cases the house needs to be well aspected.
How It Tends To Play Out
The practical consequence Hand draws is about reality rather than appearance. Unlike a relationship with the composite Sun in the first house, the strength of a seventh-house relationship is real as well as apparent to others. Both placements produce a unit. This one produces a unit that holds up under inspection.
He is careful about what a strong seventh house can and cannot promise. It cannot guarantee a marriage between two people who love each other. But since they will think of themselves as a unit, it is quite likely that they will marry or at least live together.
The Opposite House
The farther midpoint keeps some effect, and it increases as the two natal Suns approach opposition, so a seventh-house Sun should also be read through the first. Where the natal positions are near opposition, Hand treats reading both as essential.
The first house is the persona of the relationship, the impression it makes and the extent to which it registers as a unit to everyone around it. Read as an axis with the seventh, the pair covers the same territory from inside and outside. The seventh is what the partnership is, the first is how it looks. Hand's own caution about the first house, that a strong one can indicate a relationship that is all show and no substance, is the useful test to run from the other end of the axis.
He gives no threshold for when the first-house reading takes over and no formula for combining them. Both delineations stand together.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand attaches one warning, and it is intrinsic to the house rather than a matter of bad luck. The seventh is the house not only of partnership and marriage but of open enmity and intimate conflict. His best overall description of it is the house of intimate one to one encounters of any kind, and that includes the hostile ones.
With this placement, if the relationship is not going well, the two may compete with each other in a way that is disruptive and produces antagonism. His general account puts it more starkly: a clearly seventh-house relationship that is not well aspected will still be an intimate encounter, but the people may be enemies, or at least competitors.
He then makes the point that keeps this from being a warning label. Even in a healthy relationship some competitiveness is to be expected here, and normally it binds the two together rather than driving them apart. The rivalry is part of the intimacy.
The house sets the issue. Whether the competition strengthens or corrodes is read from the aspects to the Sun, which is a separate question from house position.
