Composite Sun in the twelfth house is a significant position that presents challenges many people find difficult to deal with. Robert Hand's account is one of the most demanding in the book, and he does not dress it up.
Through this relationship, both people will encounter parts of their inner selves that they would normally keep hidden from themselves as well as from everyone else. It is also possible that the relationship itself will be hidden, in the sense that others either do not know it exists or do not understand what it is about.
What This Placement Describes
Hand's general treatment of the composite twelfth house restates the traditional meanings in plain terms. The twelfth is repressed thought: once conscious ideas that have been pushed out of the waking mind because the mind chose not to deal with them. It also indicates the environmental factors that caused the repression. The traditional topics of hospitals, prisons and other places of confinement he sets aside as not really applicable here.
The problem with repressed ideas is that they produce unconsciously motivated actions, often harmful to a person or to the relationship. Because those actions are automatic, they tend to be wrong for the situation and to undo the relationship rather than help it. In a strongly twelfth-house relationship, the two do many things to and with each other that make no sense in terms of what is actually happening between them, and they end up handling behaviour patterns automatically when the situation calls for conscious evaluation.
He adds that even where a couple works hard at being conscious and open, there is often more going on that is raw, intimate and heavily psychological than most people can deal with in a personal relationship.
How It Tends To Play Out
The Sun here makes that material the substance of the relationship rather than an occasional disturbance in it. Hand asks for a thorough search of both inner selves to understand how previously hidden psychological traits are operating inside the connection.
The striking thing is his ranking of outcomes. That encounter will make each person grow as an individual, and he says the growth it can bring about is more important than survival as a couple. Very little else in the book is put that way.
He is equally clear that twelfth-house relationships cannot be dismissed. Some people benefit greatly from intense daily psychological encounter, and some find their unconscious patterns dovetail with a partner's so exactly that the two are indispensable to each other however miserable they look from outside. These relationships have to be evaluated very carefully rather than rejected out of hand, even though they are among the most difficult of all.
The Opposite House
The farther midpoint keeps some effect, and it grows as the two natal Suns approach opposition, so a twelfth-house Sun should also be read through the sixth. Where the natal positions are near opposition, Hand treats reading both as essential.
The sixth house is duty, service and the tasks a relationship has to carry out, and it is a house of inequality, where the giving and taking do not balance. Read as an axis, it is a pointed combination, because an unspoken imbalance of service is the sort of thing a twelfth-house relationship will bury rather than name. The sixth shows the work being done. The twelfth shows what nobody is saying about it.
Hand gives no threshold at which one house outweighs the other, and no method for combining them. Both are read.
Where It Gets Difficult
The most difficult result of this placement is that the relationship can become self-defeating for both people, particularly where they are not completely honest with each other. Unless secrets are disclosed, they will drive behaviour that undermines the relationship and each person's self-esteem along with it.
Hand's practical instruction is unusually firm for him. Do not enter a legally binding relationship such as marriage under this placement until the hidden psychological patterns have been thoroughly worked out. Because the position represents a potential for repression, separations and breakups can be particularly damaging as the buried pressure surfaces. He also warns that shrinking from the psychological truth in order to keep things going only undermines the partnership further, and that a breakup brought on that way destroys the growth the relationship was capable of producing.
He closes with the qualification that keeps this from being a verdict. No single position or element in a chart is enough to destroy a relationship. This one is a call to be especially careful.
