Composite Uranus in the second house can mean that two people obtain their resources in an unusual manner, or that the resources themselves are unusual. Robert Hand adds a third possibility in the same breath: that the material and financial side of the relationship will be unstable. Which of these shows up depends largely on the kind of relationship it is.
What This Placement Describes
Uranus in a composite chart is the planet of the unconventional and the unusual. Hand says it reveals alternate views of reality that help two people learn and grow, usually by way of a surprising upset that seems to invalidate what they previously believed. Handling it positively means keeping a very open attitude and structuring life as little as possible. The house position indicates where Uranus is most effective, and that area must be treated most gently, since any attempt to force a Uranian characteristic to conform to rules or expectations only produces disturbance.
The composite second house is about values, meaning what the two people value and their relationship to what is valued. Hand describes it working on two planes. On one, it shows how far shared value systems formed the relationship in the first place, how much the two came together because they value similar things. On the other, closely related, it covers whatever finances and property exist between them. He notes that not all relationships involve common property, in which case only the first reading applies. He also states a rule specific to composites: all finances here are joint finances, because you cannot clearly distinguish which person is which.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand gives the professional case first. In a business or professional association, a second house Uranus can simply mean the two are doing something in a new way, perhaps a new invention or technique, which produces income for them.
In a personal relationship it can mean the two hold a very unconventional set of values, seeing possessions very differently from other people. He names the specific form this usually takes: the pair are likely to feel that possessions are an encumbrance to be avoided wherever possible, with the result that they own very few things. Alternatively, they may want to collect unusual objects that other people do not collect.
Read on the values plane rather than the money plane, this is a relationship whose sense of what matters was not inherited. Whatever the two decide is worth having, they decided themselves.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule follows from the mechanics of the composite. There are always two midpoints for a pair of planets. The nearer is used, but the farther keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a second house Uranus should also be read through the eighth, and where the two natal Uranus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The eighth house covers joint resources, which in a composite overlaps heavily with the second, and Hand tells readers to consult both houses on any financial question. It also covers major transformations, the passing away of an old order and the building of a new one. Hand himself draws the connection in his Uranus delineations, saying that an eighth house Uranus, much like the second house placement, can indicate that the two consider possessions a burden rather than an opportunity for growth. Read as an axis, the second is what the pair own and value and the eighth is what they must be willing to let change.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand is unusually direct about which outcome is most likely. In any relationship, he says, by far the most likely possibility is material and financial instability. And he gives the mechanism rather than leaving it as a prediction. The instability results from the tendency to regard possessions and money as a nuisance. When finances are neglected, they begin to go awry.
That is a description worth taking literally. The disorder is not imposed from outside. It follows from an attitude that the two may hold quite sincerely, which is that this whole area is beneath attention.
His remedy has two steps and he numbers them. First, recognise that the pair do not take care of money and material matters properly. Second, learn how to handle them so that they are not experienced as such a problem. He generalises the principle: with any planetary energy, the work is to recognise its effects and then learn how to flow with it.
That is the balance the placement asks for. The unconventional values are not the problem and are not to be corrected. The neglect that rides along with them is.
