Composite Uranus in the third house indicates a relationship that will revolutionise the basic ways two people think about life. Robert Hand attaches a scale note straight away, and it is one worth carrying into every Uranus reading. The effects of Uranus are always noticeable but they are not always huge and cataclysmic. They may vary from very slight to very great.
This relationship will change how the two think, somehow. And they may try to communicate those new ways of looking at the world to other people, and to change their thinking too.
What This Placement Describes
Uranus in a composite chart is the planet of the unconventional and the unusual. Hand says it reveals alternate views of reality that let two people learn and grow, usually arriving as a surprising upset that seems to invalidate what they believed before. Dealing with it positively means keeping a very open attitude and structuring life as little as possible. The house position shows where Uranus is most effective, and that area has to be treated most gently, since forcing a Uranian characteristic to meet rules or expectations only produces disturbance.
The composite third house covers communication, the mind, the routine day to day environment and relatives. Hand says the communication side matters especially, because two people who cannot communicate are in real trouble. He describes the third as the house of the lower mind, running on habitual patterns of thought, unquestioned opinions and unexamined notions, and says a relationship with a strong third house usually comes about through mental affinity.
How It Tends To Play Out
The characteristic experience is having ordinary assumptions dislodged by ordinary conversation. The third house is daily thinking, and Uranus here means the daily thinking does not stay where it was. Something said in passing rearranges something that had never been examined.
Hand extends this outward. The two may try to communicate their new way of seeing to others and to change how other people think. That is the third house doing its ordinary work of exchange, with Uranian content moving through it.
He closes the delineation with a reassurance he does not offer for every house. As always with Uranus, the two must flow with the energy and let it take them where it goes. In this house especially, he says, it is unlikely that Uranus will take them somewhere they do not want or ought not to be.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule follows from the mechanics of the composite. Any pair of planets has two midpoints. The nearer is used, but the farther keeps some effect, one that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a third house Uranus should also be read through the ninth, and where the two natal Uranus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The ninth house is the overall view of the world the two take, the house of ideas and consciousness and of broadened perspective. Hand's Uranus in the ninth describes a relationship that challenges how each person looks at the world, with real disagreement to work through and, if the work is done, a shared position quite different from that of the people around them. Read as an axis, the third is how the two talk and the ninth is what the talking is ultimately about.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The failure mode Hand names is the standard Uranian one applied to speech. As with any situation where Uranus is prominent, the two must avoid making the relationship fit their expectations. If they try, the unstable side of Uranus comes into play: communication between them becomes erratic and disruptive, and they will often make each other angry.
He describes where that leads if it continues. After a while the two may find they begin to make each other nervous whenever they are together, instead of being at ease as they should be, at least in a personal relationship.
Hand then adds an observation that is honest rather than comforting. Some relationships do exist primarily so that one person can challenge the consciousness of the other, but these are not often long lived, and such a situation is not particularly desirable in a close personal relationship. A bond that runs entirely on intellectual disruption has a shape, and the shape has a limited life.
The correction is the one Hand gives for Uranus generally. The area it touches has to be left freer than would otherwise be allowed, taking its own course with a minimum of expectations. Here that means letting the shared thinking go where it goes rather than deciding in advance what the two are supposed to agree about.
