With Venus in the ninth house of a composite chart, Robert Hand says love and affection tend to be intellectual issues, discussed and pondered over rather than felt.
But he immediately supplies the compensation, and the compensation is substantial. The two examine the nature of their feelings and are more capable than most people of understanding what they mean to each other.
What This Placement Describes
Venus in a composite chart rules love and the ability to form relationships based on emotion. Hand describes its deepest meaning as the principle that draws two entities together by natural and spontaneous inner forces, and its house position as showing how far the relationship allows both people to express themselves through love and which part of their surroundings they most want to bring into the experience.
The composite ninth house signifies the overall view of the world taken by the two people. Hand calls it their collective attitudes and the nature of their intellectual exchange, and he uses the phrase consciousness expanding often in his ninth house delineations because a ninth house relationship usually broadens the views of both. They are exposed to new ideas and forced to think in terms of a broader spectrum of possibilities than before.
Since the ninth is the house of ideas and consciousness, he says a strong ninth house enables people to communicate at a very high level. They can really understand each other and share their views, and they will make more than the usual effort to understand each other. His one certainty about the house is that a strong ninth makes it very important that the two have a strong intellectual relationship, and that if they do not, that fact will be the major source of difficulty between them.
How It Tends To Play Out
The advantage Hand draws from the intellectual framing is real and specific. The two are somewhat less likely to behave in an unconscious and inappropriate manner toward each other. They can communicate at a very high level about the relationship itself. Given how much of the rest of the book concerns couples acting on motives they have never examined, that is a genuine asset.
He also describes a particular flavour the placement gives. Love may become a philosophical ideal in this relationship, much as it was in the medieval code of chivalry. The two tend to think in those terms and devote considerable attention to bringing their ideals about.
And he gives the placement an outward effect. The experience of the relationship may make both people see more clearly and become more aware of the world around them. Venus in the ninth house can signify love as an agent of consciousness expansion, with one or both being exposed to a broader range of experience because of the relationship.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a ninth house Venus should also be read through the third, and where the two natal Venus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The third house is the mind in its routine day to day operation, communication, the immediate environment and relatives. Hand's reading of Venus there describes a couple with an intellectual concern for beauty, fond of discussing painting, poetry and music, and able to verbalise what they feel. Read as an axis, the third is the daily conversation and the ninth is the world view it builds toward. The same caution appears at both ends, which is that talk about feeling can crowd out feeling.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand states the danger clearly. Because the ninth house represents the collective attitudes and the intellectual exchange of the two people, there is a risk that they will overintellectualise their feelings. Love becomes a more distant experience rather than something felt and shared intimately.
That is the honest shape of it. The understanding is genuine, the articulation is genuine, and neither is the same as contact. A couple can know precisely what they mean to each other and still be describing a thing rather than being inside it.
His general caution about the house adds a second pressure point. Difficult aspects here, especially involving Saturn, can turn the high level communication around so that failure to communicate becomes the major factor weakening the relationship, and certain combinations can create intense competition on the intellectual level. Where a relationship runs on shared ideas, disagreement about ideas is not a small matter.
The house sets the issue. Whether the exchange stays warm or turns into contest is described by the aspects to Venus, which is a separate question.
