Venus in the seventh house of a composite chart is a good indication that this is a personal relationship based to a considerable extent on affection. Robert Hand allows that there may be other reasons for the relationship, but says love is certainly one of the most important.
He also ranks it. After the Sun and Moon positions, this is one of the most important elements in the chart of a love relationship. And he qualifies it in the same breath: it does not guarantee a successful relationship, but it does help.
What This Placement Describes
Venus in a composite chart rules love and the ability to form relationships based on emotion. Hand describes its deepest meaning as the principle that draws two entities together by natural and spontaneous inner forces, with no external compulsion needed, and its house position as showing how far the relationship lets both people express themselves through love.
The composite seventh house, like the first, is a sign of a relationship in which the two are truly trying to function as a unit. Hand calls it the house of intimate one to one encounter. Where the chart is on the whole favourable, a strong seventh house is a good indication that any kind of partnership, including marriage, can survive. He is careful to say that a strong and well aspected seventh is not absolutely necessary for a marriage or business partnership, but that it helps.
He also notes what distinguishes a seventh house relationship from a fifth house one. It is not simply a matter of enjoying each other's company. The two should enjoy each other, but the more important fact is that they complement each other and make a strong whole. And the seventh is the house of open enemies as well as of partners, so a clearly seventh house relationship that is not well aspected will still be an intimate encounter, with the two as competitors or enemies.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand describes the feel of it concretely. The two will have a strong sense of shared emotion and feeling and a great need to share their experiences. They will think of themselves as a unit, a couple, rather than as two single individuals. They will want to be together and do things together as much as possible.
That matches his general point about the house. In a strong seventh house relationship the two are likely to think of themselves as we and us.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a seventh house Venus should also be read through the first, and where the two natal Venus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The first house is the persona of a relationship, the impression it makes on its surroundings and the extent to which the two are regarded as a unit in their own right. Hand's reading of Venus there describes a relationship of complements, an attraction based on difference rather than similarity, with a quiet friendly warmth that lasts. Read as an axis, the seventh is the partnership as the two experience it from inside and the first is the impression that partnership makes from outside. Both houses are angular, so both ends of this axis carry weight.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand names one danger here and only one, and it follows directly from the strength. The two may tend to be too accommodating, trying to agree with each other even when one of them has a legitimate grievance. Instead of expressing it, they stay quiet for the sake of preserving the peace and harmony of the relationship.
He describes the cost precisely. If this happens too often, the friendly atmosphere eventually wears thin and all kinds of resentments boil out, with no way to control them. The problem is not the harmony but the deferral.
His instruction is unusually blunt. Do not let the desire for peace and harmony prevent the two of you from confronting important issues. Speak your mind, he says, because it cannot seriously disturb a good relationship. That last clause is the whole argument: the placement supplies enough goodwill to survive an honest disagreement, and withholding the disagreement is what puts the goodwill at risk.
The house sets the issue. Whether the affection is expressed easily or held back is described by the aspects to Venus, which is a separate question.
