Jupiter in the eleventh house of a composite chart is an excellent placement for any relationship. Robert Hand says so without hedging, and then gives the substance behind the verdict.
It indicates that there are good feelings between the two people and that they will give each other opportunities to grow and become more evolved human beings. They stimulate each other's idealism greatly, and they will work very hard to realise their ideals.
What This Placement Describes
Jupiter in a composite chart signifies the areas that will provide a solid basis for growth through the relationship. Hand says a strong Jupiter helps to ensure that whatever the course of the relationship, both people will be aware of how much they were helped by being together. The house position designates which aspect is emphasised as a growth area, one the two can depend on for sustenance and which will not be the cause of conflict and difficulty.
The composite eleventh house is the house of friendship, and Hand says a strong one is very appropriate in a composite chart. It does not limit a relationship to friendship. It helps two people be friendly in whatever they are doing together, which he calls especially important in a sexual relationship, since lovers with a strong eleventh will also be friends. He rates it an excellent house for a marriage composite. It is also the house of hopes and wishes, so a good eleventh gives a relationship a strong sense of shared ideals, with both people looking for the same things in life.
How It Tends To Play Out
Since the eleventh house represents friendship, Hand says Jupiter here is an especially good indication of warm friendly feelings between the two. His summary is that the relationship will have excellent overall consequences for both of them, and he says a love affair or marriage with this position will be in excellent condition.
He then makes a claim about material luck, and, characteristically, explains the mechanism rather than leaving it as an assertion. The two are likely to be lucky in a material way, he says, because they are very optimistic in each other's company, and that optimism generates the kind of positive thinking that helps bring good fortune.
He extends the reading outward as well. As a couple the two will have good friends among the people they know, and circumstances in their environment will be favourable to the relationship.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So an eleventh house Jupiter should also be read through the fifth, and where the two natal Jupiter positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The fifth house is love affairs, creativity and self expression, and Hand says it signifies the extent to which a relationship lets both people be themselves in the most genuine and honest way possible. His reading of Jupiter there describes growth simply through being oneself in the other's company, warm and easy affection, and a minimum of efforts to tear the other down. Read as an axis, the fifth is growth through being who you are and the eleventh is growth through what the two hope for together. Both houses rule friendship in Hand's scheme, and the same idealism appears at both ends.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand attaches no explicit warning to Jupiter in the eleventh, and it is better to state that than to invent a caution the text does not carry.
His general remarks on the planet supply the real pressure point. What Jupiter brings should not be taken totally for granted, and there is always a danger of overextending in the area where Jupiter is significant, which can convert it into a source of difficulty. Where the energy flows easily, trouble is unlikely. Where it flows with difficulty, problems usually come from doing something to excess. In the eleventh house the excess available is in the ideals themselves, hopes pitched higher than circumstances can meet, and in a social life that expands past what the two can sustain.
His general note on the house adds a condition. A couple with a strong eleventh must be able to share a great deal of their lives with each other, or the relationship is not likely to be a very successful one.
He says plainly that Jupiter is not usually a major source of trouble in a chart and can usually be counted on to bring benevolent results.
The house sets the issue. Whether the shared ideals hold together or overreach is described by the aspects to Jupiter, which is a separate question.
