Composite Jupiter in the fifth house is a generally positive indication for the success of any kind of relationship, and Robert Hand says it is especially so for a friendship or a love relationship.
The basic meaning he gives it is compact and worth holding on to. Being together will allow both people to grow and become happier human beings, simply by being themselves. He calls it a position of benevolent self expression.
What This Placement Describes
Jupiter in a composite chart signifies the areas that will provide a solid basis for growth through the relationship. Hand says a strong Jupiter helps to ensure that whatever the course of the relationship, both people will be aware of how much they were helped by being together. The house position designates which aspect is emphasised as a growth area, one the two can depend on for sustenance and which will not be the cause of conflict and difficulty.
The composite fifth house covers love affairs, children where appropriate, creativity and self expression, and Hand says the self expression reading is especially critical in a composite. The fifth represents the extent to which the relationship provides a setting for both people to be themselves in the most genuine and honest way possible. He notes how many relationships survive only because each partner puts up a false front, and that such a relationship must collapse when the truth becomes known. Being real, he says, should not be an effort.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand's description is generous and specific. The two should be able to relax and enjoy each other's company to the fullest, and each will feel that the other supports them for what they are. They will express their affection warmly and easily.
He then names something worth pausing on. There will be a minimum of negative challenges and efforts to tear the other down, even when the two are having difficulties. Alongside that runs a strong ethical strand. Both people will be quite idealistic about the relationship, feeling that they should maintain the highest standards of ethics with each other. Honour will be a significant issue, and Hand says they will not relate in such a way as to diminish each other's importance.
He also allows a possible origin for the relationship. It may have come about because of a mutual interest in religion, philosophy, metaphysics or the law. But whatever the initial reasons, he says the two should have a more than ordinarily satisfactory relationship.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a fifth house Jupiter should also be read through the eleventh, and where the two natal Jupiter positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The eleventh is the house of friendship and of shared hopes and ideals. Hand calls Jupiter there an excellent placement for any relationship, describing good feelings between the two, opportunities given to each other to grow, and idealism that each stimulates in the other. Read as an axis, the fifth is growth through simply being oneself in company and the eleventh is growth through what the two hope for together. Both houses rule friendship in Hand's scheme, and the same idealism appears at both ends.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand attaches no explicit warning to Jupiter in the fifth, which is worth stating rather than covering with an invented one.
His general remarks on the planet supply the honest caution. What Jupiter brings should not be taken totally for granted, and there is always a danger of overextending in the area where Jupiter is significant, which can convert it into a source of difficulty. Where the energy flows easily, trouble is unlikely. Where it flows with difficulty, problems usually come from doing something to excess. In the fifth house the available excess is in the idealism and the standards: honour held so high that it becomes something to fall short of.
His general note on the house adds a structural limit. A fifth house relationship is not for people trying to operate as a single unit, because the two are together and still individuals, and the staying power needed for a long term partnership may not be supplied by a purely fifth house relationship.
He also says plainly that Jupiter is not usually a major source of trouble in a chart and can usually be counted on to bring benevolent results.
The house sets the issue. Whether the growth runs easily or overreaches is described by the aspects to Jupiter, which is a separate question.
