Composite Jupiter in the sixth house indicates a relationship in which serving others has become an ideal. Robert Hand describes both people as feeling obligated to help humanity, and taking on that obligation willingly and with dignity.
He adds an important qualification about where the obligation comes from. It is probably not imposed from outside, and if it is, the two accept it gladly.
What This Placement Describes
Jupiter in a composite chart signifies the areas that will provide a solid basis for growth through the relationship. Hand says a strong Jupiter helps to ensure that whatever the course of the relationship, both people will be aware of how much they were helped by being together. The house position designates which aspect is emphasised as a growth area, one the two can depend on for sustenance and which will not be the cause of conflict and difficulty.
The composite sixth house refers to the duties and responsibilities the relationship must fulfil. Hand notes that all relationships have obligations and that in most cases these are not harmful. They become a problem only when they are the major element, leaving no room for the self expression ruled by the fifth. In a business relationship a strong sixth is not a great problem, since there are tasks to be done and obligations to be met. He describes the house as emphasising the needful aspect of work rather than the self expressive aspect.
Jupiter there makes obligation itself the growth area, which changes how the duty is experienced.
How It Tends To Play Out
In a business or professional relationship, Hand says this placement means the two will do whatever is necessary to make the relationship successful, without feeling put upon. That last clause is the whole point. The effort is there and the resentment is not. Because of that, he says, they are likely to be successful regardless of their objective.
In any relationship, the placement signifies that the two are unusually willing to help and be of service to each other. His comment on that is dry and accurate: needless to say, this can only help them.
So the picture is of a relationship where care takes the shape of doing things, and where doing things does not feel like a cost. Hand treats that as a real form of generosity rather than a lesser one, which is consistent with how he reads Jupiter throughout.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a sixth house Jupiter should also be read through the twelfth, and where the two natal Jupiter positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The twelfth house rules the forces working unconsciously and their influence on the success or failure of a relationship. Hand's reading of Jupiter there is unusually favourable, saying unconscious actions are less of a problem than in most relationships and that the two are able to get at problems most couples keep buried. Read as an axis, the sixth is the help that is given openly and the twelfth is what is going on underneath it. Taken together, the pairing describes service that is not concealing anything.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand names one factor to keep in mind, and he is precise about it. The symbolism of Jupiter demands that whatever is given be given freely.
The failure mode follows from that demand. If one person tries to force more duties on the other than that person is willing to take on, there may be considerable trouble. He describes the consequence exactly: the one who is restricted will feel that all freedom has been destroyed, and will begin to look elsewhere for freedom of self expression. Otherwise, he says, this placement should be a source of strength for both.
That is a conditional and it is worth reading as one. Nothing here predicts that the imposition happens. What Hand is identifying is the single condition on which the generosity depends, which is that it stays voluntary.
His general remarks on the house run alongside. When the sixth is too strong, the two may see the relationship as a duty to be met rather than something to be enjoyed, and in a personal relationship a purely dutiful attitude can ultimately weaken it. And his general note on the planet applies here as everywhere: problems with Jupiter usually come from doing something to excess.
The house sets the issue. Whether the service is freely given or starts to bind is described by the aspects to Jupiter, which is a separate question.
