Jupiter in the twelfth house of a composite chart has to do with the forces working unconsciously in a relationship and their influence on whether it succeeds or fails. Robert Hand also includes the actions each person may take that affect their future as a couple, which he describes as usually unconscious actions, or actions they refuse to acknowledge unless forced to.
His verdict on the placement is favourable and he gives it early. Jupiter in this house is an indication that unconscious actions are less of a problem than in most relationships.
What This Placement Describes
Jupiter in a composite chart signifies the areas that will provide a solid basis for growth through the relationship. Hand says a strong Jupiter helps to ensure that whatever the course of the relationship, both people will be aware of how much they were helped by being together. The house position designates which aspect is emphasised as a growth area, one the two can depend on for sustenance and which will not be the cause of conflict and difficulty.
The composite twelfth house, Hand says, represents repressed thoughts, once conscious ideas that have been eliminated from the waking mind because the mind chose not to deal with them, along with the environmental factors that caused the repression. The problem with repressed ideas is that they give rise to unconsciously motivated actions, and because those actions are automatic they are often inappropriate to the situation and serve to undo rather than aid the relationship. In a strongly twelfth house relationship, he says, the two end up dealing with behaviour patterns automatically when they should be making a thorough conscious evaluation of them.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand puts the benefit in the plainest possible terms. The two are not destroying the relationship in the manner that so many are destroyed.
He does not claim there is no trouble. Although the two may have difficulties at times, at least they can bring their problems out into the open. In fact, he says, one effect of Jupiter here is that the two are able to get at problems that most couples keep buried, and he notes why that matters: such problems cause great difficulty in a relationship precisely because they are unacknowledged.
The twelfth is also the house of secret enemies, which Hand defines as people whom you inadvertently alienate simply by being yourselves. The presence of Jupiter helps prevent this from being a problem, because it makes the two conscious of their actions so that they do not alienate people in the first place.
His closing assessment is a summary of the whole delineation. Quite a few of the problems that can occur in a relationship are alleviated by this placement of Jupiter.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a twelfth house Jupiter should also be read through the sixth, and where the two natal Jupiter positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The sixth house is the duties and responsibilities a relationship must fulfil. Hand's reading of Jupiter there describes service that has become an ideal, obligation accepted willingly and with dignity, and two people unusually willing to help each other. Read as an axis, the sixth is what is undertaken openly and the twelfth is what is going on beneath it.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand attaches no explicit warning to Jupiter in the twelfth, which is unusual for the house and worth stating rather than covering over.
His general remarks on the planet still apply. What Jupiter brings should not be taken totally for granted, and there is always a danger of overextending in the area where Jupiter is significant, which can convert it into a source of difficulty. Where the energy flows easily, trouble is unlikely. Where it flows with difficulty, the problems usually come from doing something to excess.
The house itself sets a floor under any reading. Hand's overall view of twelfth house relationships is carefully balanced: he calls them among the most difficult of all, says marriage is not normally recommended for a couple with a very strong twelfth, and in the same passage notes that some people benefit greatly from intense day to day psychological encounters. They cannot be rejected out of hand and must be evaluated very carefully.
He also says plainly that Jupiter is not usually a major source of trouble in a chart and can usually be counted on to bring benevolent results.
The house sets the issue. Whether the hidden material surfaces easily is described by the aspects to Jupiter, which is a separate question.
