Jupiter in the tenth house of a composite chart has a number of possible effects, and Robert Hand says which one applies depends on the nature of the association.
In a personal relationship it indicates a strong concern with goals and status. The relationship will revolve around some sense of purpose, which may range from very mundane to very high minded.
What This Placement Describes
Jupiter in a composite chart signifies the areas that will provide a solid basis for growth through the relationship. Hand says a strong Jupiter helps to ensure that whatever the course of the relationship, both people will be aware of how much they were helped by being together. The house position designates which aspect is emphasised as a growth area, one the two can depend on for sustenance and which will not be the cause of conflict and difficulty.
The composite tenth house tells about a relationship's uniqueness and evolutionary purpose, for the two people and for the outside world, and by extension about its status and reputation. Hand notes that career has little relevance to a relationship unless it is a business or professional one, but that the deeper meaning of the house applies fully. He says a strong tenth house relationship is more than normally concerned with direction, with the two often asking what purpose this serves in their lives, and that consciousness of objectives is the main theme.
How It Tends To Play Out
For a personal relationship Hand gives two quite different concrete possibilities. In a marriage, both people may have an inordinate concern for getting ahead in society, which he names plainly as social climbing. Or the placement can indicate that the two will have a high social status without any effort on their part.
There will also be an emphasis on integrity and honesty, or at the very least the two will consider those values important.
In a professional relationship he is much more definite. This can be a very strong indication of success, particularly in fields pertaining to law, religion, philosophy, higher education or foreign interests, and in almost any other field it is also a good indication. He adds that the work the two do together will be carried out with a high degree of integrity and honesty, which will help immeasurably in their eventual success. His last word on it is pointed: the achievements will not be the result of accident or luck.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a tenth house Jupiter should also be read through the fourth, and where the two natal Jupiter positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The fourth house is the innermost bases of a relationship, its roots both geographic and emotional, and the home. Hand's reading of Jupiter there describes the home as a centre of security and comfort, generous and hospitable, and a relationship the two can turn to for sustenance whatever they meet in the world. Read as an axis, the tenth is the standing a relationship has in the world and the fourth is the base that standing rests on. Both houses are angular, so both ends carry weight.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
This is one of the few Jupiter placements where Hand names a negative effect directly, and he does it carefully, saying it appears in some charts rather than all.
The first form is an attitude of haughtiness and arrogance toward others that will not serve the two well. The second is hypocrisy, a pretence that they are somehow morally better than they really are. His explanation of why that arises is the most interesting line in the delineation: Jupiter makes you aware of moral issues even when you cannot live up to its moral criteria.
The social climbing possibility belongs in the same territory. Where status is the growth area, the pursuit of it can take over from whatever else the relationship was for.
His general note on the planet frames all of this. What Jupiter brings should not be taken totally for granted, and there is always a danger of overextending in the area where Jupiter is significant, which can convert it into a source of difficulty. Problems, when they come, usually come from doing something to excess. He also says Jupiter is not usually a major source of trouble in a chart and can usually be counted on to bring benevolent results.
The house sets the issue. Whether the concern with purpose runs cleanly or tips into pretension is described by the aspects to Jupiter, which is a separate question.
