Mars in the ninth house of a composite chart indicates a strong involvement with ideas, beliefs and philosophies of life. Robert Hand describes the ninth as the house of the higher mind and of long journeys, and Mars there makes the territory active.
His summary of the effect is compact. The two people's beliefs are very important to each of them, and being together makes them even more so.
What This Placement Describes
The basic principle of Mars, in Hand's account, is the ego drive, the energy by which a person sustains a sense of being an individual toward the world and toward others. In a composite chart it signifies the ability to create an environment where both people can express themselves fully without threatening each other. Some conflict is inevitable and should not be suppressed. The requirement is that the ego drives be basically compatible.
The composite ninth house signifies the overall view of the world taken by the two people, their collective attitudes and the nature of their intellectual exchange. Hand says a ninth house relationship usually broadens the views of both, exposing them to new ideas and forcing them to think in terms of a wider spectrum of possibilities. Because the ninth is the house of ideas and consciousness, a strong one lets people communicate at a very high level and make more than the usual effort to understand each other.
His one certainty about the house shapes this placement. A strong ninth makes it very important that the two have a strong intellectual relationship, and if they do not, that fact will be the major source of difficulty between them.
How It Tends To Play Out
Where the two people's ideas and attitudes toward life are compatible, Hand describes a genuine alliance. They will work very hard together to protect those ideas, and they will try to convince others of the rightness of what they are doing. The energy goes outward, into advocacy and into effort on behalf of something both believe.
He also gives two concrete possibilities for how the placement can manifest. It may indicate that the two will do work together involving travel over long distances. Or it can mean working together in some academic or intellectual field.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a ninth house Mars should also be read through the third, and where the two natal Mars positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The third house is the mind in its routine day to day operation, communication, the immediate environment and relatives. Hand's reading of Mars there describes arguing and intellectual disagreement where things are not going well, with the cause being that each person identifies with their own opinions so strongly that a challenge to a belief feels like a challenge to the self. Read as an axis, the third is the daily opinion and the ninth is the world view it belongs to. The same fusion of belief with identity sits at both ends, which is why Hand's remedy at both ends is self awareness.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Where the two people's attitudes are not compatible, Hand says they will waste a lot of energy trying to convince each other, causing much conflict in the process. The word he chooses is waste, which points at where the difficulty actually lies.
His diagnosis is worth following closely because it is more precise than a general caution about argument. The universe, he says, is actually large enough to encompass both sets of ideas, as well as the beliefs of those the two disagree with. But the two probably do not realise this, feeling that if other people's beliefs are true, theirs cannot be, and the reverse. That is the mistake: treating truth as a fixed quantity that has to be won.
The consequence he describes is vivid and worth taking seriously. The two are likely to react to opposition almost as if their lives were in danger. He tells them to be careful of this and to try to expand their views so that they can encompass those of other people.
That instruction is the same one his general note on the ninth house implies, where he warns that certain combinations can create intense competition on the intellectual level and great resistance to each other's views.
The house sets the issue. Whether conviction runs as shared purpose or as contest is described by the aspects to Mars, which is a separate question.
