Mars in the tenth house of a composite chart means the energy of Mars must be successfully expressed through the relationship, or there is likely to be trouble. Robert Hand states the condition first because everything else in the delineation depends on it.
The tenth is the house of the ego's most complete expression, symbolising what a person must do in order to evolve in life. In a composite it has to do with how well each person can express their life purpose within the relationship.
What This Placement Describes
The basic principle of Mars, in Hand's account, is the ego drive, the energy by which a person sustains a sense of being an individual toward the world and toward others. In a composite chart it signifies the ability to create an environment where both people can express themselves fully without threatening each other and provoking destructive conflicts. Some conflict is inevitable and should not be suppressed. What matters is that the ego drives be basically compatible.
The composite tenth house tells about a relationship's uniqueness and evolutionary purpose, for the people involved and for the outside world, and by extension about its status and reputation. Hand says a strong tenth house relationship is more than normally concerned with direction, and that the two will often ask what purpose this serves in their lives. He notes that career has little relevance to a relationship unless it is a business or professional one, and that consciousness of objectives is the main theme.
With Mars there, Hand says the issue of ego drives will be even more important than in most relationships. The tenth is angular, which increases the effect further.
How It Tends To Play Out
His central instruction is about room. The two must allow each other plenty of space to follow their own paths. He puts the point in the negative as well: it would not be a good idea for one of them to sacrifice their goals in life so that the other can pursue theirs, because eventually that course of action would become a sore point that could disrupt the relationship.
That is not a warning about either person. It is a statement about what this configuration of energy will and will not support. Each of them must be allowed to do their own thing while they are together, and Hand adds the obvious help, which is that similar ideas about what to do with their lives make the whole thing easier. Whatever the two people's ambitions are, those ambitions will be an issue in this relationship.
Where the two can agree on that, he is unreservedly positive. The energy of the tenth house Mars will serve them well. They will approach business or any other joint activity very aggressively and energetically, and the results should be excellent.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a tenth house Mars should also be read through the fourth, and where the two natal Mars positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The fourth house is the innermost bases of a relationship, its roots both geographic and emotional, along with the home and the unconscious mind. Hand's reading of Mars there says the energy is hardly noticeable when it runs smoothly and that when it does not, the sources of conflict are buried so deep that even fundamental assumptions have to be questioned. Read as an axis, the tenth is ambition in the open and the fourth is the foundation ambition rests on. Both houses are angular, so both ends carry weight.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand names two pressure points and both are specific. The first is the sacrifice problem already described, where one person's goals go quiet so the other's can proceed. His view is that this does not hold. The resentment accumulates and eventually disrupts.
The second is about the world outside. He tells the two to take care not to let these energies get out of hand, because they could generate a great deal of opposition from others that would be harmful to their best interests. A relationship that pushes hard and visibly attracts a response, and the tenth house is precisely where a relationship is visible.
Underneath both is the condition he opened with. This energy has to be successfully expressed through the relationship. Where it is, Hand's assessment is that the results should be excellent. Where it is not, the drive does not disappear. It simply finds a less useful outlet.
The house sets the issue. Whether the ambition runs as joint force or as competition is described by the aspects to Mars, which is a separate question.
