Mercury in the eleventh house of a composite chart gives two people a very hopeful attitude. Robert Hand's description is domestic in the best sense: they like to think about the future and make plans together, and the placement inclines them to be optimistic about that future as a couple.
The eleventh is the house of hopes and wishes as well as of friendship, and Mercury there puts the mind to work on both.
What This Placement Describes
Hand's general account of the composite eleventh house calls a strong one very appropriate in a composite chart, because it is the house of friendship. It does not restrict a relationship to friendship. It makes two people friendly in whatever they are doing together, which he notes matters especially in a sexual relationship, where lovers with a strong eleventh will also be friends, and in business, where associates will be friends as well. He calls it an excellent house for a marriage composite.
It is also the house of shared ideals, and a well aspected eleventh gives a relationship a strong sense of both people looking for the same things in life. He attaches a condition to it: a couple with a strong eleventh house must be able to share a great deal of their lives, or the relationship is unlikely to succeed.
With Mercury there, the shared ideals become intellectual ones. Hand says the placement is a sign that the two have similar intellectual goals, which increases their capacity for communication because they do not have to spend much time defining basic issues for each other. Because their minds are compatible, they understand each other much more quickly than they otherwise would.
How It Tends To Play Out
Friends play an important role in the shared life, and Hand is specific about which kind. The two are drawn to friends with whom they can exchange ideas and have witty, stimulating conversation. They like people who are intelligent and lively, who can constantly present them with new ideas, rather than people who seem stagnant or stodgy. He adds that younger people appeal to them especially.
That gives the relationship an open, circulating quality. New ideas arrive from outside it, brought by the people the two choose to spend time with, and the relationship metabolises them together.
The planning is real rather than idle. This is a pair who talk about what they are going to do and enjoy the talking.
The Opposite House
The farther midpoint keeps some effect, and it increases as the two natal Mercurys approach opposition, so an eleventh-house Mercury should also be read through the fifth. Where the natal positions are near opposition, Hand treats reading both as essential.
The fifth house is self-expression and enjoyment, and above all the capacity of two people to be real in each other's presence without strain. Hand's delineation of Mercury there describes talk as recreation, shared cultural pleasures, and an attraction based at least partly on intellectual affinity. Since he assigns friendship to both the fifth and the eleventh, the axis genuinely doubles at that point. What the fifth adds is the present tense. The eleventh looks ahead and outward, and the fifth is the pleasure of each other's company right now.
He gives no threshold at which the fifth reading takes precedence and no formula for combining them. Both are read.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand attaches no warning to this placement, which is worth stating plainly rather than filling in.
What the material around it suggests is a matter of emphasis. A relationship whose mental life runs outward, toward friends, plans and shared ideals, has a great deal of stimulation available and little pressure to turn the same attention inward. Optimism about the future is not the same as accuracy about the present, and this placement supplies the first generously.
His general caution about the house belongs here too. Difficult aspects, especially from Saturn, can bring conflicts of ideals, or deny friendship and leave a relationship purely professional or purely sexual. That is aspect territory rather than house territory.
The house sets the issue. How the two handle it is a separate question.
