Hand's general account of the composite fourth house extends it well past housing. It indicates the roots of a relationship, both literally in geographic terms and figuratively in terms of mental and emotional background. It signifies the innermost depths of a connection, which may lie so far inside as to be invisible at the surface. It is where underlying compatibility is checked, meaning whether two backgrounds and two basic emotional make-ups actually fit.
Most relationships find that ground hard to discuss. Hand says so directly at the end of the delineation: a fourth-house Mercury is helpful precisely because it improves communication about feelings and inner selves, which in most relationships are difficult to talk about.
The house is also angular, which lends weight to whatever sits in it.
How It Tends To Play Out
The fourth house also rules the home the two set up together, where that applies. Since Mercury rules thought and communication, Hand expects the pair to make that home as intellectually stimulating as they can. The Opposite House
Because the farther midpoint retains some effect, and it grows as the two natal Mercurys approach opposition, a fourth-house Mercury should also be read through the tenth. Where the natal positions are near opposition, Hand treats reading both as essential.
The tenth house is the outward reality of a relationship: its direction, purpose and standing in the world. Hand's delineation of Mercury there makes consciousness of life direction the key idea, with the two discussing and thinking about their aims a great deal. Read as an axis, this is a useful pairing. The fourth-house conversation goes inward, into feeling and origin. The tenth-house conversation goes outward, into where the relationship is heading. A pair holding both talks about the inside and the direction, which is more than most manage.
He gives no threshold at which the tenth reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand names the danger as the one that always arrives when Mercury sits in a position concerned with feelings, which is overintellectualising. Here it takes a specific form. The inner feelings may come to exist purely as ideas rather than as part of daily experience.
That is a real risk and a subtle one, because the placement's gift and its failure are the same motion. Being able to describe what you feel is not the same as feeling it, and a pair fluent in the language of their own inner life can end up living at one remove from it, holding an accurate account of an experience they are no longer quite having.
His instruction is short. Try not to analyse yourselves or your relationship too much. And he attaches a conditional to the whole delineation: if that warning is heeded, a fourth-house Mercury can be very helpful.
