Robert Hand's example is a pair who came together to write a book, and he is careful to add that this placement does not particularly indicate that they would. What it indicates is that they would be able to work together as a team very well if they did.
The same applies to business and commercial activity, and he names the fields: electronics, communication, data processing, transportation.
What This Placement Describes
Mercury in a composite chart signifies the quality and manner of communication between two people and how they think as a couple. Hand's general position on the planet is that being able to talk easily with each other is highly desirable even where an intuitive, unspoken understanding exists, because no one can work out what is on another person's mind without some verbal exchange.
The seventh house is the house of intimate one to one encounter. In Hand's general treatment it signals, like the first, a relationship in which two people are genuinely trying to function as a unit. In a strong seventh-house relationship they think of themselves as one, as we and us, and what matters is that they complement each other and make a strong whole.
Mercury there gives that unity a mental form. In a personal relationship, the placement indicates the ability to think as a team and to present a united front, at least intellectually, to the rest of the world. The two are generally able to share their ideas and opinions about everything.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand makes a structural point that matters for weighting. Because the seventh is an angular house, the planet occupying it is more important than it would otherwise be. Mercury strengthened in this way makes communication between the two easier and a more prominent part of the relationship than it would be elsewhere.
In practice, the relationship becomes a place where thinking gets done jointly. Positions are arrived at together and held together. Other people encounter a considered joint view rather than two separate opinions, which is part of what makes a pair like this effective in any working context.
The seventh house also covers one to one professional relationships of the consulting kind, client and lawyer, patient and doctor, client and astrologer. A well aspected Mercury there is a good sign for the clarity of that exchange.
The Opposite House
The farther midpoint retains some effect, and it increases as the two natal Mercurys approach opposition, so a seventh-house Mercury should also be read through the first. Where the natal positions are near opposition, Hand treats reading both as essential.
The first house is the persona of the relationship, the impression it makes and how far it registers as a unit to everyone outside. Hand's delineation of Mercury in the first describes minds so compatible that the two think almost as one person, along with a shared curiosity about the world. Read as an axis, the seventh is the partnership working and the first is how that partnership comes across. His caution about the first house, that it can describe impression rather than substance, is the test to run from that end.
He gives no threshold for when the first reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand attaches no warning to this placement. Saying so is more useful than inventing a fault.
What the house itself carries is the qualification he applies to everything in the seventh: it is the house of open enmity and intimate conflict as well as of partnership, and his best description of it is the house of intimate one to one encounters of any kind. A relationship that thinks as a team can also argue as one, with the same fluency turned around. Where a chart is otherwise strained, the united intellectual front becomes an intellectual contest instead.
