Composite Mercury in the sixth house indicates that two people expend a great deal of mental energy on the problems or tasks they have to accomplish together. Robert Hand describes them analysing, considering and exploring all the various ways of dealing with whatever matters to them both, whether those are material concerns or emotional ones.
The sixth is the house of work and obligation. Mercury there is the mind applied to what has to be done.
What This Placement Describes
Hand's general account of the composite sixth house is about duty. Like the sixth in a natal chart, it refers to the duties and responsibilities a relationship has to fulfil. Every relationship has obligations and most of the time they do no harm. They become a problem when they are the main element of the connection, leaving no room for the self-expression that belongs to the fifth house.
When the sixth is very strong, two people see the relationship as a duty to be met rather than something to be enjoyed, and in a personal relationship that dutiful attitude can weaken the bond over time. The clean case where it works is a situation that genuinely calls for work to be done.
Hand states the general principle inside this delineation as well: planets in the sixth house tend to emphasise duties and responsibilities at the expense of the pleasure and fulfilment that should come out of any personal relationship.
How It Tends To Play Out
The two applications he gives are worth keeping separate.
If the relationship is a business one centred on accomplishing a particular task or series of tasks, the two will go about them systematically, rationally and carefully. That is close to an ideal use of the placement.
If the relationship is an emotional or personal one, a friendship or a love affair, the same quality shows up differently. The two will do what has to be done in a systematic and careful manner, but the object of the effort becomes the relationship itself. The work is making it run better so that both get more out of it.
That capacity is genuinely valuable. A pair who will sit down and think carefully about how their relationship actually functions can solve things that other pairs simply endure.
The Opposite House
Because the farther midpoint keeps some effect, growing as the two natal Mercurys approach opposition, a sixth-house Mercury should also be read through the twelfth. Where the natal positions are near opposition, Hand treats reading both as essential.
The twelfth house is repressed thought and the conditions that produced the repression. Hand's delineation of Mercury there describes considerable mental probing of the relationship, kept private from everyone outside it, and warns that the probing can turn into playing games with each other's emotions. Read as an axis with the sixth, the combination is pointed. The sixth is methodical analysis of what is being done. The twelfth is analysis of what is not being said, and between them they can produce two people who examine their relationship almost continuously.
He gives no threshold at which one house outweighs the other, and no method for blending them. Both are read.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand's warning is exact. Be careful that the habit of dealing with problems in a reasonable way does not turn into an overconcern with your problems. He says it could reach the point where the whole viewpoint is overwhelmed with analysing the relationship.
The mechanism is easy to see. Applying careful thought to a relationship works, which is precisely why it does not know when to stop. Every difficulty invites another round of examination, and the examination feels productive even when the actual problem is that nothing is being enjoyed.
He adds that a balance obviously has to be struck, and that this is particularly important with Mercury, because where Mercury sits in a chart very strongly affects the overall attitudes of the relationship. A relationship whose mind lives in the sixth house takes on the sixth house's seriousness generally, not only in the areas where work is genuinely required.
