Composite Mercury in the twelfth house indicates that two people will do a great deal of thinking and talking about the inner psychological aspects of their relationship. Robert Hand describes considerable mental probing, of themselves and of each other.
He adds the feature that gives the placement its particular atmosphere. That process is not likely to be shared with anyone outside the relationship.
What This Placement Describes
Hand's general account of the composite twelfth house restates the traditional meanings in plain terms. The twelfth is repressed thought: once conscious ideas pushed out of the waking mind because the mind chose not to deal with them, along with the environmental factors that caused the repression. The traditional topics of hospitals and prisons he sets aside as not really applicable.
The trouble with repressed ideas is that they generate unconsciously motivated actions, often harmful to the relationship, and because those actions are automatic they tend to be wrong for the situation. In a strongly twelfth-house relationship, two people do many things to and with each other that make no sense in terms of what is actually happening between them, and they end up handling behaviour patterns automatically when the situation calls for conscious evaluation.
Mercury there is the corrective placed inside the problem. It brings language to material that usually has none. Hand calls this a good position for psychological self-understanding within a relationship, which is a real endorsement given how he writes about the twelfth house generally.
How It Tends To Play Out
The relationship is private. Hand says others may view the two as rather secretive or even clandestine in the way they communicate, and that the two will try to work out whatever problems they have inside the relationship without appealing to outsiders.
That self-sufficiency is genuine capability rather than avoidance in the first instance. A pair who can name what is moving under the surface between them, and who prefer to do that work themselves, are equipped for something most relationships never attempt.
The texture of it is a long, continuing conversation with a small audience. What gets said between these two is not said elsewhere.
The Opposite House
Because the farther midpoint keeps some effect, and it grows as the two natal Mercurys approach opposition, a twelfth-house Mercury should also be read through the sixth. Where the natal positions are near opposition, Hand treats reading both as essential.
The sixth house is duty, service and the tasks a relationship carries, and Hand calls it inherently a house of inequality where giving and taking fail to balance. His delineation of Mercury there describes systematic, careful analysis of shared problems, with a warning against overconcern. Read as an axis, the pairing is exact. The sixth is where the ordinary imbalances are generated, in the daily business of who does what, and the twelfth is where the feelings about them go when nobody says anything. Two people with this axis can analyse continuously and still miss the plain fact sitting in the sixth house.
He gives no threshold at which one house outweighs the other and no method for blending them. Both are read.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand's warning here is one of the sharpest in the chapter. Ceaseless probing into each other's minds can degenerate into playing games with each other's emotions. His instruction is to be careful how the resulting understandings get used, because using them to manipulate is likely to unleash forces that undo the relationship.
He then names the specific consequence. The two may stop communicating and start keeping everything secret from each other, which he calls extremely dangerous, because with a twelfth-house Mercury it is very likely to generate suspicion.
That is the placement's live risk, and the mechanism is worth seeing clearly. Insight into another person is power, and this position produces a great deal of insight in a setting where nothing is witnessed from outside. The same privacy that makes deep exchange possible is what allows the exchange to curdle without anyone noticing.
The house sets the issue. Whether the understanding is used honestly or as leverage is described by the aspects to Mercury, which is a separate question.
