Composite Neptune in the eleventh house indicates an unusually idealistic relationship. Robert Hand's reasoning is simple arithmetic of symbols. The eleventh is the house of hopes and wishes, Neptune is the planet of ideals, and the combination is extreme.
His caution follows immediately. Be careful that expectations of this relationship are not excessive. Relate to the other person for what he or she really is, not for what is imagined.
What This Placement Describes
Neptune in a composite chart rules what gets idealised and what goes unseen, and Hand keeps saying the two cannot be separated. Wherever Neptune falls is the area where a couple has to be clearest about what is really happening, because it is the area where they are most likely to delude themselves. He states that rule again inside this delineation, which suggests he thought it needed repeating here.
The composite eleventh house is friendship, and Hand thinks a strong eleventh is very appropriate in a composite chart. It does not restrict a relationship to friendship. It helps two people be friendly in whatever they are doing together, which he says matters especially in a sexual relationship, since lovers with a strong eleventh will also be friends. He calls it an excellent house for a marriage composite. Because it is also the house of hopes and wishes, a well aspected eleventh gives a relationship a strong sense of shared ideals, with both people looking for the same things in life. Difficult aspects can bring conflicts of ideals instead, or can deny the friendship and leave a relationship that is purely professional or purely sexual without it.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand names an effect here that he also gives in the fifth house, and it is worth taking at face value rather than as a warning. As in the other houses that concern relationships, Neptune in the eleventh can turn a relationship that would ordinarily have been sexual into a platonic one. The reason he gives is Neptune's nonphysical nature. Both people may feel that physical love is not pure enough for the kind of idealism they share.
The larger part of his delineation goes to friends, since the eleventh shows the kind of people a couple attracts by being together. Neptune indicates friends who are Neptunian in some way. They may be very artistic, or sensitive, or involved in occult and psychic matters. They may equally be simply unreliable or dishonest. Hand adds that a couple could well get both extremes at once, which is characteristic of how he treats this planet everywhere.
That is why he closes the delineation by restating the general rule about clarity. The house Neptune occupies is the house where a couple's judgement most needs checking, and here the judgement in question is about people.
The Opposite House
The paired house rule comes out of the mechanics of the composite. Any pair of planets has two midpoints, the nearer is used, and the farther keeps some effect that grows as the two natal positions approach opposition. So an eleventh house Neptune should also be read through the fifth, and where the two natal Neptunes are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The composite fifth house is self expression, love affairs and creativity, and Hand treats it as the measure of whether two people can be real in each other's presence without effort. His Neptune in the fifth gives a refined and idealised love at best, and at its commoner worst a romantic fog over serious problems. Read as an axis, the fifth is enjoying each other as you actually are and the eleventh is what you jointly hope for, and Neptune on that line lets the hope stand in for the person.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The difficulty is expectation. A relationship built on shared ideals has a high floor and a very high ceiling, and the distance between the two is where disappointment lives. Hand's instruction to relate to the actual person is not a lowering of standards, it is the thing that keeps the ideals survivable.
The friends are the second problem and the harder one to see, because judgement about people is exactly what this placement clouds. A couple who cannot tell the sensitive from the unreliable will find out slowly. Since the two extremes can arrive together, the answer is attention rather than suspicion.
The placement is not a warning against idealism. Hand's own view of a strong eleventh house in a composite is warm. What it asks is that the ideals stay attached to who is actually present. The house sets the issue. Whether the handling runs easy or hard is described by the aspects to Neptune, which is a separate question.
