Composite Neptune in the fifth house has its strongest effect on a personal relationship, especially a love affair or a marriage. Robert Hand's best case for it is a particularly idealised and refined kind of love, and he notes that Neptune's nonphysical leaning can be strong enough that the relationship stays platonic. That is what it looks like when the placement is working out.
The commoner form is romanticisation. One version of the relationship is perfect, ideal and beautiful, while serious problems sit underneath being covered over by a romantic fog.
What This Placement Describes
Neptune in a composite chart is the planet of what is idealised and of what is not seen. Hand insists the two are the same energy. Without some idealisation the attraction would not have formed in the first place, so the answer is never to abolish the ideal but to keep the reality of the situation in view beside it.
The composite fifth house is love affairs, children where that applies, creativity and self expression, and Hand treats self expression as the critical one in composite work. The fifth shows to what extent the relationship lets each person be themselves in the most genuine and honest way available. He is pointed about this. Many relationships survive only because each person puts up a false front, trying to be what they think the other wants rather than what they are, and such a relationship collapses when the truth becomes known. A well running fifth house means being real is easy rather than an effort, and a couple with a strong fifth are together because they enjoy each other and enjoy being themselves in each other's company.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand's picture of the romanticised version is not sneering. He says such a relationship can be very beautiful while it lasts. What he describes is the ending, which usually comes as a crash of disappointment when the truth comes out and the ideal lover turns out to be at best an ordinary person.
He then names the more specific shape, and he allows it may sometimes be justified. Neptune can create both the fact and the illusion of a highly spiritual relationship, including the kind where one person is seen by the other as a savior. The trouble is not the devotion, it is that the two are not relating as equals, which is what growing from the encounter requires. The same energy can run the other way, with one person spending their time caring for the other because of some severe problem. Hand's point is that both arrangements have the same defect.
Because a composite chart describes the relationship and not either person, it cannot say who is cast in which role. It says the casting exists.
His instruction closes with a hard test. Be very certain the two are really assisting each other and not working out their own difficulties by appearing to help. Help given in that spirit is no help at all, and only keeps the problem in place.
The Opposite House
The paired house rule comes out of the mechanics of the composite. Any pair of planets has two midpoints, the nearer is used, and the farther keeps some effect that grows as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a fifth house Neptune should also be read through the eleventh, and where the two natal Neptunes are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The composite eleventh is friendship and shared hopes, and Hand thinks lovers with a strong eleventh are also friends. His Neptune in the eleventh makes a relationship unusually idealistic and warns against expectations that outrun the actual person. Read as an axis, the fifth is enjoying each other as you are and the eleventh is what you hope to become together, and Neptune on that line can let the hope quietly replace the person.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The fifth house asks two people to be real with each other, and Neptune supplies a better looking version of both of them. That is the whole difficulty in one sentence. The false front Hand warns about in the fifth house is not deliberate here, it is the natural product of the idealising.
The rescue arrangement is difficult for a different reason. It feels like love and it is often sincerely meant, which is what makes it hard to name. Hand's objection is structural rather than moral. Unequal footing stops the exchange working.
The placement is not a verdict against romance. It says this relationship's refinement and its blind spot are made of the same material. The house sets the issue. Whether the handling runs easy or hard is described by the aspects to Neptune, which is a separate question.
