Composite Neptune in the first house describes a relationship that is difficult to see clearly from inside it. Robert Hand's warning is direct. There is a great danger that the two people do not understand what this relationship is all about.
He gives the difficulty two forms. Either the two hold quite widely different views of what they are in, with neither aware that the views differ. Or they have a fairly clear idea of the direction to take as a couple but real difficulty understanding where they are at any particular moment.
What This Placement Describes
Neptune in a composite chart carries two meanings that seem unrelated on the surface and are connected underneath. On one side it is disappointment, delusion, deceit, falsehood and the gradual disappearance of things. On the other it is whatever gets idealised, the spiritual current Hand places at the root of love in its highest sense, further in than Venus reaches. He says all true love rests to some extent on idealising some aspect of the other person, so the energy cannot simply be shut off. The task is to hold the ideal and the reality at once.
The composite first house is the persona of a relationship. It shows the impression the pair make on their surroundings and to what extent they will be regarded as a unit in their own right rather than as two separate people. Hand contrasts it with the tenth, which is the reality of the relationship in the outer world where the first is the impression given. A strong first house can mean a relationship that is all show and no substance, and it usually also marks one with real impact on the lives involved. It is angular, which adds weight to any planet in it.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand's example is the love relationship in which everything seems beautiful and ideal, and the world agrees, because a first house Neptune deceives the surroundings as readily as the pair. The discovery that something is radically wrong arrives late. He describes waking one morning to find the other person gone, unhappy for months without that unhappiness having registered.
The second pattern he names is the relationship that organises itself around rescue. One person is cast as the one who sacrifices in order to save the other, or the two together offer themselves in service to the world. Hand calls this usually the rankest form of self delusion, because the pattern is being used to work out private difficulties rather than to solve anything. People do not save each other this way. He adds that the shape is even more characteristic of the seventh house.
Because a composite chart describes the relationship rather than either person, it cannot say which partner occupies which side of that arrangement. It says only that the arrangement is present.
His instruction here is short. Work for a realistic relationship and do not let ideals overwhelm the ability to see the truth, and at the same time do not surrender the ideals.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes out of the mechanics of the composite. Any pair of planets has two midpoints. The nearer is used, but the farther keeps some effect, one that grows as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a first house Neptune should also be read through the seventh, and where the two natal Neptunes are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The composite seventh house is intimate one to one encounter, two people trying to function as a unit. Hand's Neptune in the seventh is where the rescue pattern belongs most fully, and it is also where he allows that a relationship may genuinely have powerful spiritual bonds and deep intuitive understanding. Read as an axis, the first is the impression the relationship gives off and the seventh is what actually passes between the two, which is the pair of things Neptune most readily separates.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The specific difficulty is that the fog is not only internal. Outsiders cannot serve as a correction, because a first house Neptune misleads them too. The usual repair for a private illusion is an outside view of it, and here that repair is unavailable.
The second difficulty is the ego. The more strongly the two need something to be a certain way, the more Neptune will delude them about it, because their own wishes build the barrier to seeing. Neptune is a selfless energy and does not answer to a demand. Where a couple can accept the situation as it stands, the same placement teaches, and may even help the ideals become real.
The placement marks the area where clear sight has to be worked for rather than assumed. The house sets the issue. Whether the handling runs easy or hard is described by the aspects to Neptune, which is a separate question.
