The twelfth is Neptune's natural house in the tradition, and Robert Hand says that makes this placement in a composite chart likely to be relatively untroublesome. That is an unusually mild opening from him on this planet, and it is deliberate.
His reason is that Neptune and the twelfth house want the same thing. Both stand for the need to go beyond oneself and deal with a higher order universe, so the planet is not being asked to work against the setting it is in.
What This Placement Describes
Neptune in a composite chart is idealisation and the failure to see clearly, held together as one energy. Hand's key to handling it is that Neptune is a totally selfless energy, not readily harnessed to the demands of the ego, and that the more a couple needs something to be a certain way the more Neptune deludes them about it. In the twelfth house that key fits the lock, because setting the ego aside is what the house is for.
The composite twelfth house, in Hand's account, is repressed thought. It signifies once conscious ideas that have been eliminated from the waking mind because the mind chose not to deal with them, and it also shows the environmental factors that caused the repression. He sets the older meanings about hospitals and prisons aside as not really applying to a composite chart. The trouble with repressed ideas is that they produce unconsciously motivated actions, and because those actions are automatic they are often inappropriate to the situation and work to undo a relationship rather than help it. He notes that twelfth house relationships are among the most difficult of all and cannot be rejected out of hand.
How It Tends To Play Out
At its best, Hand says a twelfth house Neptune means both people are able to give the relationship what it needs for things to work out in the best way. At the critical moments, when it really counts, each of them can disregard the demands of their own ego and do what has to be done without protecting their own emotional investment. Both are willing and able to sacrifice to the common good when it is necessary.
The catch is that the same capacity, carried too far, becomes its own problem. Hand calls the negative side the martyr attitude, and describes it as a peculiar kind of passive aggressiveness. The position that always yields to the other's demands while making the other feel as guilty as possible for taking advantage of a weakness. He adds a detail that keeps it from being a simple accusation. The attitude can be quite sincere, held by someone who really believes they are unworthy of a good break from their partner and therefore does not stand up for their own rights.
His closing instruction is firm. However selfless either of them thinks they are, both must get something valid from this relationship, or it will not be any good for either of them. Otherwise the unacknowledged hidden aggressions eventually surface and begin to foul things up.
The Opposite House
The paired house rule comes out of the mechanics of the composite. Any pair of planets has two midpoints, the nearer is used, and the farther keeps some effect that grows as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a twelfth house Neptune should also be read through the sixth, and where the two natal Neptunes are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The composite sixth house is the duties and responsibilities a relationship has to fulfil. Hand's Neptune in the sixth raises a high ideal of service, warns about the same martyr pattern, and insists that each person's own needs remain legitimate and must be met. Read as an axis, the sixth is what the two openly take on and the twelfth is what they have stopped admitting about taking it on, and the martyrdom Hand describes runs the length of that line.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The difficulty here is unusual in that it is a virtue overrunning its boundary. Nothing has to go wrong for the martyr pattern to form. It grows straight out of the genuine capacity Hand praises in the paragraph above it.
What makes it hard to catch is the sincerity. Someone who truly believes they deserve nothing is not performing, and the guilt they generate is not calculated. Because a composite chart cannot say which person is which, this is best read as a shape the relationship can take rather than anyone's behaviour.
Hand's correction is an accounting question rather than a moral one. Is each person getting something real out of this. If the answer is yes, the placement is what he says it is, comfortable and generous. The house sets the issue. Whether the handling runs easy or hard is described by the aspects to Neptune, which is a separate question.
