What the ninth house Pluto wants is to convince. Hand puts the word in quotation marks himself and explains why, because to those on the receiving end, bludgeoned may feel like the better word.
What This Placement Describes
Pluto in a composite chart is death and regeneration, the force that clears away an order which has outlived its purpose. Hand says its power comes from within, since the transformations it rules arise out of the nature of what is being transformed. He also gives a rule about its use that belongs here more than anywhere else in the book. The energy of Pluto should never be harnessed to the ego.
The composite ninth house is the overall view of the world taken by the people in a relationship, which Hand often calls consciousness expanding, since a ninth house relationship usually broadens both people's views and exposes them to a wider range of possibilities. As the house of ideas and consciousness, a strong ninth lets two people communicate at a very high level and makes the exchange of ideas important enough that they will make more than the usual effort to understand each other. He notes in the same passage that Mars and Pluto in this house can create intense competition on the intellectual level and great resistance to each other's views, which is a direct signpost to this delineation.
How It Tends To Play Out
The effect is strong in both directions. The two will have a marked effect on each other, and together they will have a great impact on other people. Hand adds a caution about effort. There is no need to make a special push to do this beyond what happens naturally, and in fact it is not a good idea.
His reasoning is about the ego. Most people want to know the truth in order to be right rather than to understand and gain wisdom. Where Pluto's energy is used to show people they are right, which he says is very likely in the ninth house, others are provoked into trying to prove them wrong, and they will try very hard, even at the risk of doing real harm.
Inside the relationship the same thing does its own damage. Hand describes necessary communication being replaced by contests of rightness, so that the things which have to be said are not said.
Kept under reasonable control, he says, the ninth house Pluto means something quite different. The two have an uncannily deep perception into the basic psychological nature of their relationship, and can use that perception to make needed changes and to adapt as the world around them changes.
The Opposite House
The paired house rule comes out of the mechanics of the composite. Any pair of planets has two midpoints, the nearer is used, and the farther keeps some effect that grows as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a ninth house Pluto should also be read through the third, and where the two natal Plutos are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The composite third house is communication, the everyday mind and the immediate surroundings. Hand's Pluto in the third gives deep, profound thought aimed at the forces behind events, along with the risk that one side tries to mould the other's thinking until it feels like being brainwashed. Read as an axis, the ninth is the shared world view and the third is the daily talk through which it is argued, and the persuasion problem runs the whole length of the line.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The difficulty is that being right is a poor substitute for being understood, and this placement makes the first one feel urgent. Hand is specific that the loss is conversational. What needs saying goes unsaid because the exchange has turned into a contest.
The outward version has its own cost. Force applied to opinion generates resistance in proportion, and Hand says the resistance can get sharp enough to be harmful. His remedy is to stop pushing rather than to push more carefully.
The perception is the real asset here, and it is available on the same terms. Kept off the ego, the same depth reads the relationship accurately. The house sets the issue. Whether the energy is experienced as difficult or easy is described by the aspects to Pluto, which Hand treats as a separate question.
