Composite Pluto in the tenth house signifies a very powerful energy in a relationship, strongly oriented toward reaching some objective. Robert Hand says the nature of the objective depends on the nature of the relationship, but that in every case it will have to do with making changes in the world around the two people.
The most concrete thing he says about it is short. A tenth house Pluto means the relationship will somehow heighten the ambitions of the pair.
What This Placement Describes
Pluto in a composite chart rules death and regeneration, the clearing away of an order that has outlived its purpose so a new one can form. Because of the force involved, Hand says the energy is often experienced purely as power, and that this power comes from the inevitability of Pluto's transforming quality. In a relationship it shows up as power conflict, either between the two people or with the outside world, and the house position tells which of those is likelier.
The composite tenth house carries much the weight it has in a natal chart, minus career, which Hand says has little relevance to a relationship unless the relationship is a professional one. What remains is the deeper meaning. The tenth tells about development as a distinct being and how that distinctness is established in the world, which is why it governs status and reputation. Applied to a composite chart it is the uniqueness and evolutionary purpose of the relationship. Hand says a strong tenth house relationship is more than normally concerned with direction, and that the two often ask what purpose it serves in their lives. He separates it from the eleventh cleanly. The eleventh holds ideals and hopes. The tenth holds plans likely to be realised, because they are the real intention of the relationship.
How It Tends To Play Out
Other people will feel that the two are very powerful, Hand says, even where separately they do not give that impression. Alongside it, the relationship will alter and transform their life direction and raise their appetite for reaching what they are after.
Handled well, he thinks the placement is a good indication that together the two can achieve something of note. They may gain power in business or politics, or simply become influential among the people around them, or feel the effect most strongly between themselves, as the relationship helps them work out what they really want to do with their lives and start doing it.
Handled badly, the danger is specific and Hand does not soften it. Pluto in the tenth house can be destructive, and its effect is to ruin reputations utterly, and possibly something more fundamental. He gives the cause rather than leaving it as fate. This usually happens because the two have been ruthless in some way, toward others or with each other, letting no one stand in their way as they go after what they want. When they meet a stronger person or a situation they cannot control, havoc breaks loose.
His remedy is proportionate. Control the ruthlessness. Keep other people's needs and wants in mind while pursuing the goals, and treat each other with the same consideration.
The Opposite House
The paired house rule comes out of the mechanics of the composite. Any pair of planets has two midpoints, the nearer is used, and the farther keeps some effect that grows as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a tenth house Pluto should also be read through the fourth, and where the two natal Plutos are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The composite fourth house is the roots and innermost depths of a relationship. Hand's Pluto in the fourth puts powerful forces at that inner level, with the past conditioning events, deep unconscious patterns steering things, and a home that can concentrate pressure rather than relieve it. Read as an axis, the fourth is the private ground and the tenth is the public aim, and the drive outward tends to be fed from below.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The difficulty is that ruthlessness is efficient right up until it is not. A couple who let nothing stand in the way make progress, and the arrangement holds while they are the strongest thing in the room. Hand's collapse scenario is about meeting something bigger, which is a matter of time rather than of character.
The reputation exposure is the second difficulty. The tenth house is the public record of a relationship, so what goes wrong here goes wrong where everyone can see it.
He does not call the placement destructive as such. He calls it powerful, and says the destruction follows from a particular way of using it. The house sets the issue. Whether the energy is experienced as difficult or easy is described by the aspects to Pluto, which Hand treats as a separate question.
