Composite Saturn in the fourth house sits at the root of a relationship, in the part of it that lies deepest and shows least. Robert Hand says the placement has its most serious effect in a marriage or a love relationship where the two intend to live together, and that it designates an inner incompatibility that makes living together difficult. He then qualifies that at once. It is not that living together is impossible, but that this is the area where the greatest difficulties will be found.
What This Placement Describes
Saturn in a composite chart shows where the relationship carries insecurity and where it takes on definite form. Hand calls Saturn an inhibitor, the resistance in reality that forces things to assume a shape, and says the house position reveals which part of the bond will be most structured and, if unchecked, most rigid. He is equally clear that Saturn very often indicates a lasting relationship, and that its usual gift is reliability in place of flamboyance.
The composite fourth house is angular, which adds weight, and Hand says it means far more than the home. It indicates the basic roots of a relationship, both literally in geographic terms and figuratively in mental and emotional background. It signifies the innermost depths of a bond, which may lie so far within as to be invisible at the surface. He says the fourth should be checked to see whether there is an underlying compatibility between the two, in background and in basic emotional and psychological characteristics. Where there is an actual shared home, the fourth describes it, because the home is where the deepest attitudes have their strongest impact.
How It Tends To Play Out
Even when the Saturn influence is well handled, Hand says it still has effects. Home life is characterised by austerity. The shared home is kept very simple, uncluttered and neat. He adds a sentence that keeps this from being a criticism: there is nothing wrong with this, as long as it is not an outward reflection of an inward coldness.
In any kind of relationship with this placement, Hand describes a feeling of distance, as though the two were unable to touch each other at some very deep inner level. Where problems are consciously felt, they have to be dug for. They are not superficial problems and a superficial solution will not deal with them. Both people have to get past deep seated inner fears in order to confide with complete trust.
His practical counsel follows from that, and it is unusually specific. It is probably a good idea to get to know each other gradually. Do not be in a hurry. And under favourable conditions, he says, Saturn can make a relationship quite enduring.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. There are always two midpoints for a pair of planets. The nearer one is used, but the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that grows as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a fourth house Saturn should also be read through the tenth, and where the two natal Saturns are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The tenth house is the status and direction of the relationship, its uniqueness and its evolutionary purpose. Hand's Saturn in the tenth describes a pair strongly conscious of their objectives who work hard and reach them. Read as an axis, the fourth is the private foundation and the tenth is the public direction, and both are angular.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The honest difficulty here is the inner distance, and Hand does not soften it. The problems this placement raises are deep rather than superficial, and they do not respond to a quick fix. Where the austerity of the shared life becomes an expression of emotional coldness rather than a preference for simplicity, the fourth house has stopped supplying what it is supposed to supply, which is the reliable centre a relationship goes out from and returns to.
Hand's general remarks on Saturn apply directly. He says Saturn signifies fears, and that fear generates a negative energy which can make the worst come true, and he tells readers to relax about the areas Saturn most influences rather than tightening around them. In the fourth house the fear is of being fully known, and the trust he asks for is exactly what the fear resists.
He also says that Saturn's influence sometimes makes a relationship nearly impossible, and that when that is the case it is a reality to be accepted. That is stated as a possibility to be tested against the whole chart, not as a verdict on the placement.
The house sets the issue. Whether the depth is reachable or defended is described by the aspects to Saturn, which is a separate question.
