Composite Saturn in the tenth house puts Saturn close to its own natural ground. Robert Hand says that in many ways Saturn is in its own house here, and the reading follows from that. The nature and goals of the relationship matter a great deal to the two people. They are strongly conscious of their objectives and will work very hard to reach them.
He calls it perhaps more favourable to a professional relationship than to a personal one, and adds at once that in either case it will not hurt.
What This Placement Describes
Saturn in a composite chart shows where a relationship carries insecurity and where it takes on definite form. Hand describes Saturn as an inhibitor, the resistance in reality through which everything is forced to assume a shape, and says the house position reveals which part of the bond is most likely to be structured. He states plainly that Saturn very often indicates a lasting relationship, and that in such cases it replaces flamboyance with reliability.
The composite tenth house carries much of its natal meaning, though Hand says career has little relevance to a relationship unless the relationship is a professional one. The deeper reading is about development and direction: how a relationship establishes its uniqueness in the world, its status and reputation, and its evolutionary purpose both for the two people and for those around them. A strong tenth house relationship is more than usually concerned with direction, and the encounter often helps the two find out what they are doing in the world. He distinguishes the tenth from the eleventh: the eleventh holds ideals and hopes, while the tenth holds plans that will probably be realised, because they are the real intention of the relationship.
How It Tends To Play Out
Together the two work very hard to get ahead on their own terms, whatever those terms are. Hand says they both feel it is necessary to work hard, and notes that the feeling may be exaggerated.
Sometimes the placement can produce a sense that the world is bearing down on the pair. Whether or not that is actually the case, he says, they will have to work quite hard together to get where they want to be. Success will not come easily, but it will come, given diligence and no shortcuts. The success of the relationship, whatever its purpose, depends on doing the work carefully and meticulously. The presence of Saturn guarantees that if the work is not done thoroughly and a strong foundation is not laid for future action, there will be trouble later on.
Follow that, Hand says, and a tenth house Saturn makes it possible to reach objectives with great success. His summary sentence is worth stating as he puts it: this is not a bad position for Saturn, but it requires a great deal of responsibility.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes out of the mechanics of the composite. There are always two midpoints for a pair of planets. The nearer is used, but the farther keeps some effect, one that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a tenth house Saturn should also be read through the fourth, and where the two natal Saturns are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The fourth house is the roots of a relationship, its geographic and emotional background, its innermost depths and, where there is one, the shared home. Hand's Saturn in the fourth describes austerity at home, a feeling of inner distance, and problems that have to be dug for. Read as an axis, the tenth is the visible direction and the fourth is the private ground that direction stands on. Both are angular. A pair working hard toward objectives will find that what the objectives cost is paid at the fourth house end.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The difficulty here is the exaggeration Hand flags twice. The two feel they must work hard, and that feeling may be larger than the situation requires. They may feel the world is bearing down on them whether or not it is. Both are perception running past its evidence, and a relationship organised around them spends more than it needs to.
There is also the cost of a life organised around objectives. Where the sense of purpose becomes the only content, the pair may find they have built the thing they intended and lost track of why.
Hand's general remarks on Saturn are the balance. Saturn signifies fears, and fear generates an energy that can make the worst come true, so the response he asks for is to relax about the areas Saturn most influences rather than to grip harder.
The house sets the issue. Whether the effort feels chosen or compelled is described by the aspects to Saturn, which is a separate question.
