Composite Sun in the eighth house may give two people a feeling of fatedness, a sense that this relationship is going to play an important part in their lives even if it does not last long.
The eighth is the house of major transformation, involving the destruction of an old way of being and the birth of a new one. In conventional natal work it is called the house of death, and Robert Hand is careful to block the obvious misreading: this does not mean an eighth-house relationship ends quickly. It means something in each person dies and something new is born.
What This Placement Describes
Hand's general treatment of the composite eighth house gives it two distinct levels, and he asks that both be kept in mind because either or both can show.
The first is shared resources. Traditionally the eighth covers joint finances and property, and in a composite chart it is difficult to separate from the second house, because you cannot clearly distinguish between the two people. One difference he does allow is that the eighth can refer to the finances and property of people outside the relationship. Otherwise the two houses cover much the same ground, and he urges anyone reading one to review the other.
The second level is transformation, and it is the one he treats as the house's own meaning. Traditionally it is death, but what it really means is the passing away of any old order and the building of a new one. A strong eighth house is more likely to indicate a relationship of great significance that brings about major change in two lives, especially at the psychological level, than to indicate great involvement with property.
How It Tends To Play Out
Both people will experience this relationship deeply. Hand says they will be exposed to the most basic and profound aspects of their own and each other's inner nature, and that they will likely confront each other in a way that forces change in the areas of their lives that are not working out. Psychological change is the expected outcome rather than an occasional side effect.
In a sexual relationship, physical sex takes on unusual importance, and Hand is specific that this is not entirely for its own sake. Sex is likely to be experienced as something that transcends ordinary reality, not as an escape from it but as something that gives greater depth to everyday life. The attitude toward it will not be casual.
The resource strand appears here too. Like a second-house Sun, this position can produce a strong drive to acquire, or it can mean that possessions matter greatly to the security of the relationship.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule applies with full force to a placement this deep. The farther midpoint retains some effect, and that effect grows as the two natal Suns approach opposition, so an eighth-house Sun should also be read through the second. Near opposition, reading both is essential.
The second house is values, meaning both what two people prize and what they own. The overlap with the eighth is unusually large in a composite, since all finances in a composite are joint finances, and Hand himself sends the reader back and forth between the two. Read as an axis, the pair asks whether the transformation the eighth describes is supported by shared values or undermined by incompatible ones, since a relationship that changes people at depth still has to agree on what is worth having.
He gives no threshold at which the second-house reading takes precedence and no method for merging the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The specific caution Hand attaches concerns the acquisitive side. Emphasis on possessions can distort a pair's perspective here, and he states plainly that emotional needs are actually more important than possessions. He then softens the warning, because the eighth house is more fundamentally emotional and psychological than the second, so this is not as likely to become the source of trouble.
The larger difficulty is the transformation itself. Being exposed to the most basic parts of your own nature, and having change forced in the areas that are not working, is not comfortable. Some of what dies here will be missed. The feeling of fatedness that makes the relationship compelling is the same feeling that makes it hard to hold at arm's length long enough to think about it.
House position sets the issue. Whether the change is handled well or badly is described by the aspects to the Sun, which is a separate question.
