A relationship with composite Sun in the tenth house is likely to be a significant one. The tenth is one of the most important houses in any chart, and Robert Hand reads it as overall life direction or purpose, showing up as reputation, career, sense of self in relation to the outside world, and the general direction something has to take in order to evolve.
Placed in a composite, that becomes the purpose of the relationship itself.
What This Placement Describes
Hand's general account of the composite tenth house sets career aside almost immediately. Career has little relevance to a relationship unless the relationship is a business or professional one. The deeper meaning is what he keeps. Even in an individual chart the tenth tells about development as a unique human being and how that uniqueness gets established in the world, which is why it also carries status and reputation, and why it describes the direction of someone's evolution and the main events of that process.
All of that applies to a composite, especially the uniqueness and evolutionary purpose of the relationship, both for the two people and for the world outside it. A strong tenth-house relationship is more than normally concerned with direction. The two will often ask what purpose this serves in their lives, and often the encounter itself helps them find out what they are doing in the world.
He is precise about the difference between the tenth and the eleventh. The tenth is not ideals and hopes, which belong to the eleventh. Its issues are plans likely to be realised, because they are the real intention of the relationship.
How It Tends To Play Out
The first thing this position indicates is an identity of purpose. Either the two share the same aims in their lives together, or at minimum they are able to help each other reach the goals they have each set. Hand notes the obvious usefulness of that in a business or professional relationship, and then insists it matters just as much in a personal one.
If the relationship goes anywhere at all, it will have a strong effect on both people's sense of life purpose. It may help them define themselves and answer the question of who they are, or it may carry them further along a path already chosen. At the very least, Hand says, they will feel a strong community of purpose and direction, and a sense that their aims complement each other.
He also notes that a tenth-house relationship is not especially likely to be a professional one. Profession is only one aspect of life direction and one that has been rather overemphasised. What someone does for a living may have little to do with the central purpose of their life.
The Opposite House
Because the farther midpoint retains some effect, increasing as the two natal Suns approach opposition, a tenth-house Sun should also be read through the fourth. Where the natal positions are near opposition, Hand treats reading both as essential.
The fourth house is the roots of a relationship, geographic and emotional, and the innermost depths that may not be visible at the surface. It is where underlying compatibility is checked. Hand draws the contrast between these two houses himself when discussing the tenth-house Sun, and the axis is the most useful thing about this placement: a relationship with a clear public direction still has to have something at home in it, and the fourth is where that is either present or missing.
He gives no threshold for when one house outweighs the other and no method for combining them. Both readings are held.
Where It Gets Difficult
Since the tenth is also the house of status, some couples under this Sun become excessively concerned with how they look to others, with social image or standing in the community, while ignoring serious emotional problems that may be dismantling the relationship from inside.
Hand generalises the risk. There is a danger of being far too concerned with the outer world and not concerned enough with your own subjective business, which he says is valid in its own way. He frames it as the exact opposite of the trouble a fourth-house Sun brings. The particular form it takes here is a habit of dealing with difficulties by adjusting matters in the external world when the origin of those difficulties is inside the two people.
Even with that, he ends where he started. This is a good indication of an important relationship, one with a strong shared sense of life purpose and direction that lets two people work well together.
