Composite Uranus in the eleventh house signifies that the guiding ideals of the relationship are quite different from the usual ideals in a relationship of its kind. Robert Hand puts the point simply. The two have their own reasons for being together, and they have chosen not to seek out the same things that other people seek in life.
What This Placement Describes
Uranus in a composite chart is the planet of the unconventional and the unusual. Hand says it reveals alternate views of reality that let two people learn and grow, usually arriving as a surprising upset that unsettles what they believed before. Handling it means keeping a very open attitude and structuring life as little as possible. The house position shows where Uranus is most effective, and that area must be treated most gently, since forcing a Uranian characteristic to conform only causes disturbance.
Hand describes the composite eleventh house as holding two things: the ideals of a relationship, as opposed to its actual purposes, which come from the tenth, and the kinds of friends the two have as a couple. In his general house essay he calls a strong eleventh very appropriate in a composite chart, since it is the house of friendship. It does not limit a relationship to friendship but helps two people be friendly in whatever they do together, and he calls it an excellent house for a marriage composite. As the house of hopes and wishes, a well aspected eleventh also gives a relationship a strong sense of shared ideals.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand's example is the clearest statement of the placement. While most people marry for love, companionship or sex, with this placement two people might marry for mutual intellectual stimulation, or to work together for a cause, or for some other unusual reason.
He then makes a point that cuts against the assumption that an unusual motive is a weak one. This fact does not affect the viability of the relationship, whatever type it is. If the motives are strong enough, he says, they will serve just as well as more conventional ones.
The second half of the house shows up in the company the two keep. As a couple they may find themselves drawn to a different set of friends, people neither would have become involved with except for something this relationship opened up in them. Hand reads that as a reflection of the fact that the relationship has brought new expectations of life and made them more open to a variety of experience.
Both halves point at the same thing. What the two want, and who they want it around, was arrived at inside the relationship rather than inherited.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Any pair of planets has two midpoints. The nearer is used, but the farther keeps some effect, one that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So an eleventh house Uranus should also be read through the fifth, and where the two natal Uranus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The fifth house is love affairs, creativity and the ability of each person to be genuine in the other's presence. Hand's Uranus in the fifth says a relationship may have to take an unusual form in order to express itself fully, and asks for a good deal more freedom of movement than is customary. Read as an axis, the eleventh is what the two are together for and the fifth is how they enjoy each other, and Uranus at either end means neither answer will be the standard one.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
This is one of the placements where Hand attaches no warning, so the honest difficulty has to be drawn from what he says about the house and about the planet.
On the house, his general essay notes that difficult aspects can bring about conflicts of ideals in a relationship, and that a couple with a strong eleventh house must be able to share a great deal of their lives with each other, since otherwise the relationship is not likely to be very successful. An eleventh house built on unusual ideals depends on those ideals continuing to be shared. Where the two are together for a reason rather than out of convention, the reason has to hold.
On the planet, Hand's general instruction is that the area Uranus touches must be released and allowed to take its own course with a minimum of expectations, because Uranus under pressure becomes rebellious. Applied here, that means the shared ideals cannot be fixed in place. What the relationship is for may change, and holding it to an earlier answer is what makes trouble.
