When composite Uranus is in the fifth house, Robert Hand says, a relationship may have to take an unusual form in order to express itself fully. How that works out depends on the kind of relationship it is.
In a love relationship or a marriage, the practical consequence he names is freedom of movement, more of it than is customary. That is the whole substance of the delineation and he returns to it from several directions.
What This Placement Describes
Uranus in a composite chart is the planet of the unconventional and the unusual. Hand says it can reveal alternate views of reality that help two people learn and grow, usually by way of a surprising upset. Handling it means keeping a very open attitude and structuring life as little as possible. The house position shows where Uranus is most effective, and that area has to be treated most gently, because a Uranian characteristic under pressure becomes rebellious.
The composite fifth house covers love affairs, children where that applies, creativity and self expression. Hand says the self expression reading is especially critical in a composite chart. The fifth represents how far the relationship provides a setting for each person to be genuine and honest, and he says being real should not be an effort. A strong fifth house signifies a relationship very concerned with self expression, where the two are together not to form a team but because they enjoy being themselves in each other's company. He adds that the staying power a marriage needs may not be supplied by a purely fifth house relationship.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand's reading of a love relationship here is direct. A love affair with this position may be better off if it does not become a marriage. Both people value their freedom greatly and do not wish to be restrained by the obligations a legal arrangement entails.
If they do decide to marry, the requirement is a great deal of freedom given on both sides. He is specific about what that means: the marriage must not become a barrier to other relationships. And he is equally specific about the quality of the permission. It has to be genuine, because otherwise it will be sensed as false, and what follows is concealment, which destroys the relationship faster than anything else would.
He then guards against the obvious misreading. This placement does not require that the two have outside affairs. It requires that the relationship not be felt as a barrier. Either person is free to keep to this one relationship. What cannot happen is one being made to do it.
For other kinds of relationship, the placement shows up as a desire to have fun in unusual ways. The two seek out unusual amusements, perhaps off beat art forms, or simply like to be a little wild and unconventional together. Hand notes this can apply to a marriage as well.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. There are always two midpoints for a pair of planets. The nearer is used, but the farther keeps some effect, one that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a fifth house Uranus should also be read through the eleventh, and where the two natal Uranus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The eleventh house is friendship and the shared ideals, hopes and wishes of a relationship. Hand's Uranus in the eleventh describes a pair whose guiding ideals differ from the usual ideals for a relationship of their kind, and who are drawn to a different set of friends. Read as an axis, the fifth is how the two enjoy each other and the eleventh is what they are together for, and Uranus at either end means the answer will not be the standard one.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The difficulty is in the demand itself. This placement asks for a kind of freedom that most conventional arrangements are not built to hold, and Hand's warning is about the counterfeit version. Permission that is given for the sake of appearances rather than meant is worse than no permission, because it produces hiding, and hiding is what does the damage.
There is a second, quieter cost. A purely fifth house relationship may not supply the staying power a long term partnership needs, since the two are together as individuals rather than as a unit, and Uranus sharpens that individuality further.
His general counsel stands as the working instruction. The area Uranus touches has to be left much freer than would otherwise be allowed, taking its own course with a minimum of expectations. Not that it will be lost by being released.
