Composite Uranus in the first house gives a relationship a strong drive for freedom of expression. At the very least, Robert Hand says, it will be a highly individualistic one. It may have begun very suddenly. Or the two may be people who would not ordinarily have been expected to come together at all.
Either way, he says, being together will have a revolutionary effect on both, revealing aspects of themselves that neither knew existed. The lives of those around them will be affected too.
What This Placement Describes
Uranus in a composite chart is the planet of the unconventional and the unusual in its ordinary workings. Hand says it can also reveal alternate views of reality that help two people learn and grow, though this usually happens by way of a surprising upset that seems to invalidate previous beliefs about life. The only way to deal with it positively is to keep a very open attitude and to structure life as little as possible. Some structure is necessary, but Uranus demands flexibility.
He is specific about the house position: it indicates where Uranus is most effective, and that area must be treated most gently. Forcing a Uranian characteristic to conform to rules or expectations only causes disturbance, because Uranus under pressure becomes rebellious.
The first house is angular, which gives more weight to any planet in it. Hand calls it the persona of a relationship, the impression it makes on its surroundings and the extent to which the two are regarded as a unit in their own right. He notes that a strong first house usually marks a relationship with a great impact on the lives involved.
How It Tends To Play Out
The visible character of the pair is unusual in a way that neither person is individually. The individuality belongs to the relationship. Two people who separately look ordinary enough can become, together, the pair nobody quite expected.
Hand describes the beginning as often sudden, and the effect on both as revelatory. What the relationship does is show each person something about themselves that was not visible before it existed. He extends the same effect outward, saying that the lives of people around the pair are also affected. A first house Uranus does not stay contained.
The benefit he names is conditional and he states the condition clearly. Only if the two approach the experience with a totally open mind, free of expectations, will they get the maximum out of it. What they get then is a challenging experience that lets them grow and expand their consciousness for as long as the relationship lasts.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes out of the mechanics of the composite. Any pair of planets has two midpoints, exactly opposite each other. The nearer one is used for the chart, but the farther one keeps some effect, and that effect increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a first house Uranus should also be read through the seventh, and where the two natal Uranus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The seventh house is intimate one to one encounter, the house of two people genuinely trying to function as a unit, and also the house of open enemies. Hand's Uranus in the seventh describes a pair who strike out into new paths together and who must grant each other an unusual degree of freedom of action. Read as an axis, the first is the unconventional face the pair shows the world and the seventh is the unconventional arrangement they have to make between themselves. Both houses are angular, so both ends carry weight.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The danger Hand names is pressure toward conformity, whether it comes from the two themselves or from the people around them. Trying to make this relationship fit established patterns of behaviour is what triggers the negative side of Uranus, and he describes that side precisely: instability, and unconventionality for its own sake.
The second difficulty is restlessness. Uranus means not wanting to be trapped in predictable patterns, and Hand says the two tend to be easily bored by predictable situations and then want to get out. That is a real structural problem for a bond that needs some ordinary continuity to survive, and it is worth naming as a cost rather than as a flourish.
His general counsel is the response. Uranus is an energy that insists on being given free rein, and the ability to handle it depends on how free the two are. The area it touches has to be left much looser than would otherwise be allowed, not because the relationship will be lost, but because it has to take its own course with a minimum of expectations.
