Composite Uranus in the seventh house means that together the two will strike out into new paths, whether the relationship is professional, business, marriage or friendship. Robert Hand says this may refer to the structure of the relationship or to what they do with it.
He is franker about the risk here than elsewhere in the chapter, and the risk and the remedy turn out to be the same fact seen from two sides.
What This Placement Describes
Uranus in a composite chart is the planet of the unconventional and the unusual. Hand says it reveals alternate views of reality that let two people learn and grow, usually arriving as a surprising upset, and that handling it means structuring life as little as possible. The house position shows where Uranus is most effective, and that area must be treated most gently, because a Uranian characteristic forced to conform will only cause disturbance.
The composite seventh house, like the first, marks a relationship in which the two are truly trying to function as a unit, the house of intimate one to one encounter. Where the chart is on the whole favourable, a strong seventh is a good sign that any partnership can survive. The two are likely to think of themselves as one, as we and us, and what matters most is that they complement each other and make a strong whole. He notes the seventh is also the house of open enemies, so a bond here that is not well aspected remains an intimate encounter in which the two may be competitors.
How It Tends To Play Out
The relationship itself is the new territory. The innovation sits in the partnership rather than in either person, which is exactly how a composite has to be read. Whatever arrangement the two arrive at is one they worked out rather than one they inherited.
Hand states the central requirement as a demand from the planet. Uranus requires that the two come to an accommodation that is uniquely their own, and if they try to act along purely traditional lines they may create pressures that make the relationship very unstable.
In any partnership with this placement, the two must grant each other an unusual degree of freedom of action, especially regarding other people. Attempts to restrict each other will only increase the pressures against their survival.
Hand adds a constructive direction. It is a good idea for the two to work together toward something new and unconventional, such as a movement for humanitarian or political reform. The qualification is the important part: whatever they choose, they must be doing it that way because they want to rather than because it is supposed to be done that way. Uranus does not easily permit doing something for the sake of convention.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Any pair of planets has two midpoints. The nearer is used, but the farther keeps some effect, one that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a seventh house Uranus should also be read through the first, and where the two natal Uranus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The first house is the persona of a relationship, the impression it makes and the extent to which the two are seen as a unit in their own right. Hand's Uranus in the first describes a strong drive for freedom of expression and a revolutionary effect on both people. Read as an axis, the seventh is the unconventional arrangement the two make between themselves and the first is how it looks from outside. Both houses are angular, so both ends carry weight.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand does not soften this one. In a marriage, a seventh house Uranus can be a source of difficulty unless the two have the courage to do things their own way and not worry about conventional notions of marriage. Most commonly, in fact, this placement in a marriage chart does indicate an unstable and short lived marriage, and he says the same holds for any other partnership with a seventh house Uranus.
That is the observation as he gives it, and it comes with a condition attached. The instability follows from trying to run the relationship on standard terms. The pressure comes from the mismatch, not from the freedom.
The second difficulty is that the freedom required is uncomfortable to grant. Restricting each other is the natural move when a bond feels loose, and here it is the move that increases exactly the pressures it was meant to relieve.
His general counsel is the working instruction. The area Uranus touches must be released, not because it will be lost, but because it has to take its own course.
