Composite Uranus in the fourth house signifies a relationship with an unusual home base. In a love relationship or marriage, Robert Hand says, that can mean the home itself is unusual, or that there is something unusual about the two living together.
He gives a test that shows exactly how he wants this read. An unmarried couple living together might have this placement, but only if they themselves regard the situation as unconventional or in defiance of morality. Couples for whom living together seems the most natural and obvious move would be less likely to have it. The placement means the pair express their unconventionality through the home they share, so what counts is whether they experience it that way.
What This Placement Describes
Uranus in a composite chart is the planet of the unconventional and the unusual. Hand says it reveals alternate views of reality that help two people learn and grow, usually through a surprising upset. The way to handle it is to keep a very open attitude and to structure life as little as possible. The house position shows where Uranus is most effective, and that area must be treated most gently, because a Uranian characteristic forced to conform only produces disturbance.
The composite fourth house is angular, which adds weight, and Hand says it means far more than the home. It indicates the basic roots of a relationship, both literally in geographic terms and figuratively in mental and emotional background, and it signifies the innermost depths of a bond, which may lie so far within as to be invisible at the surface. He calls it the reliable centre the two go out from to face the world and return to for rest, and the place to check for underlying compatibility.
How It Tends To Play Out
The first form is a home base that is genuinely out of the ordinary and felt as such. The shared living arrangement is where the pair's difference from convention shows itself, whether in the place, the terms of it, or the fact of it.
Hand names a second and quite different form. The home life may be unpredictable and unstable, so that whenever the two come together they do not know what to expect. He does not treat this as interesting. He says it can make the pair very uneasy, to say the least, because the fourth house is the basis for everything else, and if there is no rest there, the relationship can be very unpleasant.
His practical instruction follows from the distinction. Before setting up house together, the two must first determine which effect is operating in their case. If it is the second, he says, perhaps they should reconsider. The relationship can continue, but the homes should stay separate.
In other kinds of relationship, the placement simply means the two continually challenge some inner aspect of each other, which Hand says can be stimulating or can simply make them uneasy.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. There are always two midpoints for a pair of planets. The nearer is used, but the farther keeps some effect, one that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a fourth house Uranus should also be read through the tenth, and where the two natal Uranus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The tenth house is the status and direction of a relationship, its uniqueness and its evolutionary purpose. Hand's Uranus in the tenth describes a pair whose purpose may be to challenge and revolutionise the views and lives of those around them, with instability in social standing as a possible cost. Read as an axis, the fourth is the private base and the tenth is the public direction, and both are angular. An unconventional public role has to rest on something, and the fourth house is where that something either holds or does not.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The difficulty is specific and Hand does not generalise it away. The fourth house is supposed to supply rest. Uranus in the fourth can supply unpredictability instead, and unpredictability at the root of a shared life is expensive in a way that unpredictability elsewhere is not.
His advice is unusually concrete: work out which version is running before committing to a shared household, and if it is the unstable one, keep separate homes and let the relationship continue on that footing. That is offered as a way to keep the bond rather than a way out of it.
The general Uranus counsel still applies. The area Uranus touches has to be left freer than would otherwise be allowed, taking its own course with a minimum of expectations, since Uranus under pressure becomes rebellious.
