He is careful with the claim. The position does not guarantee that there will be a love relationship. It indicates emotional intensity concerning love.
What This Placement Describes
Venus in a composite chart rules love and the ability to form relationships based on emotion. Hand describes its deepest meaning as the principle that draws two entities together by natural and spontaneous inner forces, and its house position as showing how far the relationship allows both people to express themselves through love.
The composite eighth house has two distinct meanings and Hand insists on holding both. The first is joint finances and property, which in a composite is hard to separate from the second house because you cannot clearly distinguish between the two partners. One difference he allows is that the eighth can refer to finances and property of people outside the relationship.
The second meaning is entirely its own. Traditionally the eighth is the house of death, but Hand says this is not limited to physical death. It really means the passing away of any old order and the building up of a new one, which is why he calls it the house of major transformations. A strong eighth house relationship, he says, will very likely make a considerable impact on both people, especially at the psychological level.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand reads Venus here as the mingling of love and death, or more accurately love and regeneration. In a love relationship the expression of love will be quite intense, with a powerful quality that transforms both people in some fundamental way. They will experience love as a regenerative experience that makes them over into new people. He says a sexual relationship particularly will carry this intensity.
He describes the register directly. The love will not be light and gay but something very serious, involving both people at all levels of mind, body and soul.
On the financial side he is equally direct. Venus promises material prosperity within this relationship. He notes that Venus is often said to rule money and that although some have questioned this, Venus does produce an ability to attract money, especially in the second and eighth houses. He calls it an especially good placement if the two ever require financial help from others.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So an eighth house Venus should also be read through the second, and where the two natal Venus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The second house is values, meaning what the two people value and their relationship to what is valued, and secondarily whatever finances and property exist between them. Hand's reading of Venus there describes a love of beautiful things, an emphasis on comfort, and a good indication of having whatever the two need. Read as an axis, the second is what the relationship holds and treasures and the eighth is what it costs and what it transforms. Since Hand already says the two houses cannot be fully separated in a composite where finances are concerned, this pairing is especially close.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand attaches no explicit warning to Venus in the eighth, and that is worth stating rather than filling in with an invention. The pressure in the placement is visible in what he does say.
Intensity is the material here, and he describes the relationship as one that makes both people over. Transformation of that kind is not comfortable while it is happening, and the eighth house by its nature involves the passing away of an old order before a new one is built. A couple with this placement is signed up for that process whether or not they intended it.
The other honest observation is his own qualification. Emotional intensity concerning love is not the same as love, and this placement can produce a charge between two people that has all the seriousness of a deep bond without necessarily being one. His general note on Venus applies here too: a strong Venus with poor indications elsewhere can draw two people together powerfully while they are not really compatible.
The house sets the issue. Whether the intensity moves cleanly or gets stuck is described by the aspects to Venus, which is a separate question.
